Mechanical Design Engineer

Salary: ca £30-35K

Reporting To: Chief Technical Officer

Location: Office Based in Papworth, Cambridge

Hours: 37.5 per week

Join one of the UK’s most exciting and rapidly growing solar energy businesses.

At Viridian Solar, we are shaping the future of solar technology within the construction sector. Part of Marshalls PLC, we combine the agility of a fast-growing innovative business with the stability and support of a leading UK PLC.

As we enter a new phase of expansion, we are looking for a motivated mechanical design engineer to join our R&D team, contributing to new product development and product improvement.

If you’re ambitious, innovative and eager to learn, we’ll provide the training, support and opportunities to help you develop.

The role

We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of new products from concept through to production, as well as the ongoing improvement of existing products. You’ll work across the full product lifecycle—helping translate requirements into practical designs, supporting testing and certification, and collaborating with internal teams and international manufacturing partners.

This is a hands-on role with opportunities to contribute to innovation, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting new product development from early concept through to production design
  • Contributing to the improvement of existing products by incorporating feedback from internal teams, customers, and partners
  • Creating and maintaining technical design documentation, including drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Interpreting design requirements and helping define product specifications
  • Designing mechanical components using 3D CAD tools
  • Building and testing prototypes to validate designs
  • Supporting product testing, certification, and type approval for UK and international markets
  • Assisting with product launches, both internally and externally
  • Supporting early installations and gathering feedback for further improvements
  • Troubleshooting design and performance issues in existing products
  • Adapting and customising products for new applications or markets
  • Updating technical documentation in line with design changes and certification requirements
  • Collaborating with overseas manufacturing partners to support production and quality

About you

We recognise that people come from a range of backgrounds and experiences, so if you don’t meet every requirement but feel this role could be a good fit, we’d still encourage you to apply.

  • Experience in mechanical engineering design (through industry experience, academic projects, or similar practical work)
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Understanding of the product development process, with some experience in design (this could include internships, placements, or early career roles)
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools (e.g. Creo/ProE or similar); familiarity with PLM systems such as Windchill is helpful but not essential
  • Experience in construction, building, or roofing design is a plus but not required
  • Mandarin language skills are beneficial but not essential

You may also bring:

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail and a structured approach to your work
  • Ability to manage your time and meet deadlines
  • A proactive approach and willingness to take initiative
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Willingness to travel occassionally
  • Clear communication skills when working with colleagues and external partners

What we offer

  • 26 days paid leave, rising to 28 days after two years’ service, plus public holidays
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Generous company pension scheme, 3% employee; 6% employer
  • Private Medical Insurance through Vitality Health
  • Company shares ownership programme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Summer and Christmas company events
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • 2x Salary death in service
  • Employee discount scheme
