Full job description

Put some of the world's most impressive machinery back on the battlefield.

As a full-time soldier, entry-level Metalsmith in the British Army, you'll:

  • Develop key skills to become a competent welder, sheet metal worker and blacksmith
  • Learn how to repair and modify heavy machinery and vehicles
  • Master specialist welding equipment
  • Learn to work under tough conditions in hostile territory across the world
  • Provide operational support to units you work with
  • Study for qualifications including a NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Engineering and qualifications in all major welding techniques.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be between 16 years 6 months and 35 years 6 months
  • Have a GCSE Grade A-C/9-5 or Scottish National 5 in Maths, English Language and one other subject
  • Be able to pass a basic fitness test.

From the start of your training, you'll earn £27,282 a year which will go up as you progress in your career.

Step 1 is your initial military training. Step 2 will be 51 weeks at the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering where you'll learn how to fabricate and weld metals.

You'll also receive 30 days' annual leave every year (plus bank holidays and extra leave after operations), free medical and dental care, cheaper living costs, and free gym and sports facilities.
