The New Foscote Hospital, part of the Akessa Health Care Group, is looking for an experienced dynamic and organised Senior ODP or Anaesthetics and recovery nurse, to join our team. This role is due to a long standing ODO colleague’s planned retirement after decades of service at this hospital.

This is an exciting time to join a hugely reputable organisation and provide the highest standards of care, with significant investment having been made into the hospital with ultra clean laminar flow operating rooms.

Role Purpose:

At The New Foscote Hospital, the Registered Nurse/ODP will assist the Anaesthetist to support the delivery of the care provision within the Operating Department. Anaesthesia is a skilled area, requiring attention to detail, technological knowledge, knowledge of anatomy and physiology and pharmacology, and importantly excellent communication skills, compassion and empathy and respect for patient dignity. The Post Anaesthetic Recovery (PAR) is the final stage in patients’ perioperative journey, and employs a one-to-one practitioner to patient ratio.

Core Responsibilities:

  • To act with the upmost professionalism and to adhere to the NMC / HCPC code of conduct, depending on your professional body.

  • Monitor and assist in the delivery of patient care
  • Respect the patient’s dignity, privacy, wishes and beliefs
  • A ‘hands on’ role within the theatre suite
  • Encourage, develop and enhance the skills and knowledge of others and self
  • Promote best evidence-based practice
  • Apply and ensure others comply with legislation, policies and procedures
  • Support the anaesthetic and recovery phases of the operating journey

Main Duties and Key Accountabilities:

  • Be involved in the daily briefing ‘Huddle’ before the commencement of surgical lists, and ensure the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist is completed and adhered to for all patients
  • Checking the anaesthetic machine and troubleshooting problems
  • Getting the anaesthetic room ready – including preparation of a range of airway equipment, equipment, equipment for cannulation, preparation of equipment used for drug administration
  • Bringing patients from the ward to the designated theatre after all the necessary checks have been completed and documented in the patients pathway.
  • Be proficient in using our Compucare 8 perioperative patient’s journey
  • Applying patient monitoring / torniquet if required
  • Assisting with the administration of anaesthetic
  • Being skilled in communicating including written documentation
  • A skilled recovery practitioner competent in airway, monitoring, and pain management
  • Provide a detailed handover to the ward staff
  • Be prepared to mentor student nurses and junior staff
  • Ensure the working environment is as safe as possible and complies with company, professional, legal requirements and guidelines
  • Adhere to Infection Prevention Control policies and procedures
  • Drug checking & pharmacy control

In addition:

  • Be accountable for own standards of work
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Attend appropriate training sessions to improve standards of practice
  • Attend all mandatory training sessions
  • Adhere to hospital-wide policies, procedures and standards
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings
  • Maintain courteous and professional relationships with all colleagues, visitors and consultants
  • Promote effective communication within all department areas
  • Support colleagues and work co-operatively to promote good team morale
  • Perform any other duties as required and assessed as competent to do so
  • Actively work to maintain the standards set by The Care Quality Commission

Knowledge & Experience

  • Registered Practitioner with NMC or HCPC
  • Previous experience within a similar role
  • Experience/qualification in anaesthetic
  • Experience /qualification in recovery
  • Understands that safeguarding is everyone’s business
