The Role

I am looking for an Independent Medical Appraiser to conduct private medical appraisals for doctors working in the UK.

The majority of appraisees are locum doctors around FY3 level or International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are in, or approaching, their first NHS role. The appraisals are generally straightforward and the emphasis is on providing a friendly, supportive and constructive appraisal experience.

All appraisals are conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams.

Who I Am Looking For

You do not necessarily need to be a consultant. The role would suit a relatively senior doctor who is comfortable supporting more junior colleagues through the appraisal process.

You should:

• Be a friendly, approachable and supportive doctor.
• Be relatively senior, for example an SAS doctor, Associate Specialist, Specialty Doctor or Consultant.
• Have completed a recognised medical appraiser training course.
• Have experience of conducting medical appraisals.
• Be comfortable conducting virtual meetings and producing clear appraisal reports.

Important Requirement

The main prerequisite is that you must already have completed at least five medical appraisals for another designated body, for example an NHS Trust.

This is likely to make the role particularly suitable for an SAS doctor, Associate Specialist or relatively new consultant who undertakes a small number of appraisals for their NHS organisation and would like to undertake additional independent appraisal work.

Support Provided

You would not simply be left to work everything out yourself.

I can:

• Show you the appraisal system and how the process works.
• Talk you through how I structure the appraisal meeting.
• Provide guidance on reviewing portfolios.
• Help you understand what should be covered during the appraisal.
• Provide guidance on writing appraisal summaries and reports.
• Be available for advice on more unusual or difficult cases.

Once familiar with the system, the appraisals are relatively straightforward.

Workload

I would expect approximately four appraisals per week, although there can be flexibility depending on your availability.

Appraisals are arranged virtually, making the role easy to fit around existing clinical commitments.

Remuneration

The fee is £200 per completed appraisal.

At approximately four appraisals per week, this equates to:

£800 per week

or approximately

£40,000 per year in additional income, depending on the number of appraisals undertaken.

This could therefore provide a useful source of flexible secondary income alongside an existing NHS or clinical role.

Pay: £30,000.00-£40,000.00 per year
