We’re looking for a Medical Technician to join our Occupational Health team at British Steel. This is an important hands-on role supporting the delivery of our health screening programme and helping to ensure our employees are medically fit and safe to carry out their roles.

Working under the supervision and guidance of our Registered Nurses and reporting day to day to the Senior Technician, you’ll undertake a variety of occupational health assessments, including pre-placement and driver medicals, health surveillance and substance misuse testing.

The role will be predominantly based at our Scunthorpe site, although you’ll need to be flexible and willing to travel to other British Steel sites when required.

Key Responsibilities

• Carrying out pre-placement medical assessments for new employees.
• Undertaking driver medicals, including blood pressure, height, weight and urinalysis checks.
• Completing vision testing, audiometry and spirometry assessments.
• Supporting substance misuse testing as part of the pre-placement process.
• Providing appropriate first aid treatment within your level of competence.
• Supporting health promotion and employee wellbeing activities.
• Accurately recording medical assessments and producing relevant reports.
• Providing administrative support, including medical records, insurance documentation and fit note processing.
• Handling telephone enquiries, messages and reception duties.
• Ensuring appropriate medical stocks, equipment and documentation are readily available.
• Maintaining the highest standards of patient confidentiality and data protection at all times.

What we need to know about you

We’re looking for someone who combines excellent people skills with accuracy, professionalism and a genuine interest in occupational health.

Ideally, you’ll have previous experience within a healthcare environment, for example as a Nursing Associate, Healthcare Assistant, Medical Technician or in a similar healthcare role.

You’ll also have:

• Excellent written, listening and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent organisational and time-management abilities.
• A diligent and accurate approach to record keeping.
• The ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.
• Good IT and literacy skills, including experience using Microsoft Office.
• A willingness to undertake the training required to become competent in all aspects of the role.

You’ll be expected to complete appropriate audiometry and spirometry training, alongside any other training and competency assessments required for the position.
