Job summary
The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) is a specialised, independent judicial body whose principal statutory functions are to hear appeals in respect of decisions made by competition and regulatory authorities and claims for damages (to recover losses caused by infringements of competition law) brought by individual / groups of claimants. Its jurisdiction in competition and economic regulatory cases extends to the whole of the UK and is central to the UKs competition system.
This is an exciting opportunity to develop real experience at the cutting edge of both substantive competition law and legal procedure. The work of the Tribunal covers every aspect of competition litigation, including appeals against infringement decisions, judicial reviews of merger and market investigations and private litigation (including collective actions and fast track procedures).
Job description
You will be working directly for the President, Chairs and Registrar of the Tribunal. The post encompasses a case handling role central to the work of the Tribunal.
Key Accountabilities include:
- Liaising with the parties and members of the Tribunal to ensure the most effective conduct of cases before the CAT
- Researching case law and produce well written analyses
- Advising Chairs and members of the Tribunal on legal and procedural issues arising in the conduct of cases
- Attend hearings and assist on relevant issues as required
- Prepare drafts of orders, judgments and written materials
- Assist in relation to outside speaking engagements
Person specification
The successful candidate will be an experienced lawyer and a team player, capable of handling procedural matters and analysing issues of law and fact raised in the submissions from parties.
