Laboratory Manager

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

2 years FTC available immediately

Total package value up to £96k per annum depending on experience and qualifications. The package is inclusive of International Supplement based on family status, Relocation costs and Pension contribution.

Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

Most healthcare provision takes place on-island, so the clinical lab provides a range of services with limited external help. You will lead and manage the lab, ensuring a 24-hour high quality, cost-effective service.

You will deliver clinical technical services using your excellent analytic skills and background in Biomedical Sciences, interpreting laboratory investigations and results. You must also challenge, innovate and develop medical lab practice.

Wielding a £400k budget, you will work strategically to develop the long-term workforce planning strategy to recruit, retain and develop Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants. Training and mentoring them while building links with overseas academic institutions, you will be responsible for the security, quality, integrity, and safe use of data, and compliance with local data handling regulations, sustaining a culture of continuous quality improvement. Working closely with clinicians you will agree service contracts and manage workload allocation, performance and career development.

Holding a Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent with HCPC Registration or equivalent, you demonstrate advanced theoretical and practical knowledge. Expert in routine diagnostic procedures, you have considerable post-qualification experience in a routine medical laboratory, including a senior or managerial role in a laboratory setting where you have set up staff development and performance protocols You have practical experience of UKAS accreditation processes and good understanding of legislation and regulations.

As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

• Annual Pension Contribution of 7.5% of the basic aggregate salary

• Annual Leave of 30 days per annum (with an additional 9 days of public holidays).
