Who are we?

We’re a specialist employee benefits provider, striving to create healthy, happy workplaces. As part of the international Unum Group, we’re on a collective mission to help the working world thrive.

The role

What will you be doing?

What will you bring?

About us

We’re a specialist employee benefits provider committed to creating healthy, happy workplaces. As part of the international Unum Group, we support millions of people through some of life’s most challenging moments — helping them stay financially secure and get back to living well.

At Unum, we combine technical excellence with humanity, fairness and care — and we’re proud of the difference our people make every day.

The role

We’re looking for experienced Senior Claims Assessors to join our Income Protection Claims team. This is a key role where your expertise, judgement and empathy will directly support customers at critical points in their lives.

You’ll take ownership of assessing complex and long‑term Income Protection claims, balancing robust technical decision‑making with clear, compassionate communication. Alongside case ownership, you’ll play an important part in developing others — coaching, mentoring and contributing to strong technical standards across the team.

What you’ll be doing

  • Assessing Income Protection claims from both a medical and financial perspective, including complex and long‑term cases

  • Interpreting policy documentation accurately and applying sound technical judgement

  • Communicating decisions clearly, sensitively and in line with Treating Customers Fairly principles

  • Maintaining checking authority and ensuring claims are paid accurately and on time

  • Working closely with rehabilitation teams and internal stakeholders to support positive return‑to‑work outcomes

  • Coaching and mentoring colleagues, completing file reviews and supporting technical development

  • Building trusted relationships with customers, clients and colleagues

  • Contributing to continuous improvement and management information where required

What you’ll bring

  • At least 5 years’ experience assessing Income Protection claims (essential)

  • Proven experience managing complex and long‑term IP cases

  • Strong technical knowledge of Group Risk products and policy interpretation

  • A good understanding of long‑term medical conditions, NHS pathways and rehabilitation processes

  • Experience using claims management systems and functional assessments

  • Confident written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain decisions clearly

  • A collaborative approach, with a genuine interest in coaching and sharing knowledge

What we offer

  • A competitive salary plus performance‑based bonus (8.5%)

  • We operate a flexible working model, including fully remote options for candidates who live beyond a reasonable commuting distance from our offices.

  • Pension scheme

  • Life assurance, private medical and income protection cover

  • A wide range of wellbeing benefits, including:

    • Remote GP and second medical opinion

    • Nutrition coaching and personal training

    • Unlimited mental health support

  • 27 days’ holiday, plus bank holidays, with the option to buy or sell up to 5 days

  • Salary sacrifice electric car scheme with free onsite charging

  • Ongoing development in a supportive, purpose‑driven organisation
