Full job description

Overview

This practice is a mixed private, family-run, four-surgery practice. Our promise to patients is simple: your comfort comes first. Our nurses make that promise real in the surgery. They keep patients calm and safe, keep clinicians running to time, and increasingly carry skills that grow the practice: digital scanning, radiography, CBCT and sedation.

As Lead Dental Nurse, you set the standard for that team. You plan the nurse rota, run inspections and audits, train and sign off nurses on our career ladder, and act as the practice lead for infection control and decontamination. You also make sure every patient considering larger treatment has their clinical photos and scans taken before their consultation. You remain a working chairside nurse, and are expected to model the standard you set.

Key responsibilities:

You are accountable for everything below being done, on time and to standard. You are not expected to do every task yourself: delegate to the nursing team where it makes sense, and check it has been done.

Leading the nursing team:

Plan the nurse rota and arrange cover for absence without cancelling patients. Run a monthly nurses' meeting, raise concerns and improvements, and follow every action through. Contribute nursing updates, actions and compliance points to the practice meeting minutes. Hold regular 1:1s with each nurse, giving clear feedback on performance and reporting trends to the Practice Manager. Carry out return-to-work meetings for nurses after any absence. Induct every new nurse and support trainee nurses through their course, arranging extra training with the Practice Manager's agreement. Mentor nurses at every tier of the dental nurse career ladder and sign off their competencies before they move up. Deliver chairside training for the nursing team, covering four-handed dentistry, aspiration, instrument and material handling, and each clinician's preferred set-ups. Be a role model for the nursing team in standards, attitude and patient care. When your surgery is quiet, help in other surgeries, support reception and pick up extended duties.

Clinical standards:

Carry out regular surgery inspections, then give each nurse written feedback and an action plan. Audit medical history and patient record forms to make sure they are complete and up to date. Make sure clinical notes and charting are accurate and recorded on Dentally at the time of treatment. Keep your own extended duties current, including radiography, CBCT and intraoral scanning on the iTero and MEDIT. Carry out all dental nurse clinical duties as set out in the dental nurse job description.

Infection control and decontamination:

Act as practice lead for infection prevention and control, to HTM 01-05 standards. Make sure decontamination room validation tests and logs are completed every day. Run the infection control audit every six months and share the action plan with the team. Manage the clinical waste system, making sure every bag and sharps bin is tagged and labelled with the practice code and address, and that consignment notes are kept. Act as the main point of contact with the clinical waste provider, including collections, missed pickups and contract queries.

Radiography:

Run the practice radiography audit, covering image quality grading, justification and written reports, and share the action plan with clinicians. Carry out routine quality assurance checks on the intraoral x-ray units, OPG and CBCT, and keep the QA log up to date. Make sure every nurse completes the x-ray logs on DCME for each exposure, and follow up any gaps. Arrange the Radiation Protection Adviser's routine equipment tests and make sure any actions are completed. Make sure the local rules are displayed and current, and that every nurse taking radiographs is trained and entitled as an IR(ME)R operator.

Compliance and CQC readiness:

Know the CQC standards and HTM 01-05 requirements the practice must meet, and keep the surgeries inspection-ready at all times. Run the clinical audit schedule, including infection control, radiography and, when sedation is offered, sedation. Hold the key to the controlled drugs cabinet, or designate a named nurse to hold it. Carry out the antibiotic stock take, keep the Antibiotic Log up to date, and run the antibiotic prescribing audit, sharing the results with clinicians. Report to the Practice Manager every month on compliance: audit results and action plans, log and check completion, team training status, incidents and anything outstanding before inspection. Own the practice maintenance matrix: a single register of every recurring service, test, licence and certificate, with due dates. This includes x-ray and RPA checks, autoclave and washer-disinfector validation and servicing, compressor and suction servicing, pressure vessel inspections, legionella and water testing, PAT testing, fire equipment servicing, gas safety, the music licence and waste contracts. Book anything coming due and make sure nothing lapses. Check the emergency drugs and medical emergency kit weekly, including oxygen and the defibrillator, and record the checks. Make sure every nurse's GDC registration, CPD, BLS, safeguarding and hepatitis B records are current. Report equipment faults to the practice's maintenance contractor and follow them through to repair.

Clinical stock:

Be responsible for clinical stock being ordered on time and within budget, whether you do it yourself or a team member does. Carry out stock checks in the surgeries so that stock is shared fairly and not stockpiled. Rotate stock and remove anything out of date.

Clinical photography and scanning:

Make sure every patient considering larger treatment, such as implants, Invisalign or cosmetic work, has the standard clinical photo series and intraoral scans taken before their consultation. Make sure photos and scans are taken to a consistent standard, with the patient's consent, and filed correctly in Dentally. Make sure consented before-and-after photos are captured for case records and, where the patient agrees, marketing. Train and sign off nurses on clinical photography and scanning on the iTero and MEDIT.

General Feed back improvements, for both the team and the practice, to the Practice Manager. Carry out any other reasonable duties asked by the Practice Manager or practice owners.

Pay: From £18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 38.75 per week

Experience:

  • Dental assisting: 2 years (required)

Work Location: In person
