Salary: £34,762.82 per annum

Location: York

Hours: Core hours: 44 hours per week on a 4-on, 4-off rota pattern (Shift starts at 8:00 AM; ad hoc on-call and overtime as required)

The Role

The Private Ambulance Crew (Reactive Days) role is essential for delivering responsive, dignified collections of the deceased from places of death or containment and bringing them into company care. Working on a dynamic shift pattern, this role combines compassionate frontline customer service with strict procedural compliance, digital tracking precision, and safe transport operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Reactive Deceased Collections & Client Care

• Remove the deceased as instructed from hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, and private residences in a responsive, highly dignified manner.
• Transport the deceased as tasked to coroners, crematoria or other locations using approved, task-appropriate equipment.
• Deliver outstanding customer care, demonstrating empathy and active listening skills when interacting with grieving families, care personnel, and vulnerable individuals.
• Act as a Brand Ambassador for the company, ensuring personal appearance and vehicle presentation reflect the business in a positive manner.

2. Operational Support & Cross-Functional Flexibility

• Support other areas of the operation as required by business demand, including assisting with mortuary care, transfers, ashes returning or scheduled collection tasks.
• Maintain a flexible approach to daily duties, adapting efficiently to operational priorities delegated by management.
• Assist site teams during operational peaks or resource shortages to ensure continuous, high-quality service delivery.

3. Identity Verification, Compliance & Digital Body Tracking

• Conduct rigorous identity verification of the deceased before performing any removal or transport operation.
• Maintain 100% compliance with the Body Tracking Application, utilising QR codes to record detailed progress at every task stage.
• Ensure strict adherence to legal requirements at the point of death, reporting any compliance variances immediately to the duty phone.
• Conduct dynamic risk assessments prior to executing tasks to maintain safe and compliant working practices.

4. Mortuary Care & Cremation Preparation

• Book the deceased into the mortuary following established company processes.
• Perform encoffining duties, attaching appropriate identification and nameplates as required.
• Remove jewellery, medical devices, and materials unsuitable for cremation, verifying removals both visually and via a metal detector.
• Facilitate the return of ashes as tasked, maintaining accurate tracking records throughout.

5. Fleet Care & Driving Standards

• Perform pre-journey inspections to ensure company vehicles are roadworthy, presentable, fully equipped, and clean before commencing duties.
• Log and report vehicle faults or routine maintenance requirements promptly to management.
• Drive within the law and company guidelines, maintaining a courteous driving style that reflects positively on the company.
• Comply fully with company safety guidelines regarding manual handling, lone working, and vehicle care.

Candidate Profile

Experience & Qualifications

• Customer Representation: Proven experience representing a company in a first-line, customer-facing capacity.
• Procedural Compliance: Experience working strictly in accordance with detailed operational guidelines and compliance rules.
• Driving Licence: Full UK driving licence.
• Physical Fitness: Capability to meet the physical demands of manual handling and deceased care operations.
