Full job description
What this job is about:
We're a small British company in Edinburgh making medical devices that are used in hospitals across the UK and Europe. Everything is designed and built here, by hand, by a handful of people.
Your job is to build those devices carefully from written instructions, and to fill in the paperwork that shows each one was made properly. Because they're medical devices, getting it right matters far more than getting it done quickly. We'd always rather you stopped and asked than guessed.
Who we're looking for:
You'll need to be:
- Good with your hands. Steady, neat and accurate, and happy working with small parts and fiddly jobs for a decent stretch of time. This is the one thing we can't teach you.
- Someone who follows the instructions. Exactly as written — no shortcuts, no improvising, no assuming.
- Willing to stop and ask. If something doesn't look right or doesn't match the instructions, we want you to down tools and say so. Nobody here will ever be annoyed with you for that.
- Honest and tidy with paperwork. You only ever sign for work you've actually done.
- Reliable. In a team this size, one person not turning up stops the whole thing.
- Comfortable with basic measuring, and able to tell wiring colours apart (happy to discuss adjustments if that's a problem for you).
- Legally allowed to work in the UK.
Handy if you've got it, but not essential:
Soldering, crimping or wiring · any hands-on trade where you've made, built or repaired things — electronics, aerospace, cars, defence, dental lab, instrument repair, watchmaking, even serious model making · reading drawings and parts lists · using digital calipers · a full UK driving licence.
Things we'll teach you from scratch:
How medical devices are regulated and how our quality system works · our paperwork · handling sensitive electronics · electrical safety testing · using calibrated equipment · our full product range · and, in time, how to make our surgical probes by hand — fine, detailed work and a genuinely skilled thing to learn.
What you'll actually be doing:
Building our medical devices. Assembling the units, stands and accessories from the current instructions, drawings and parts lists — wiring, looms, crimping, soldering, connectors and mechanical assembly. You'll gather and check the parts before you start, and always work from the up-to-date version of the instructions.
Filling in the build records. Every device gets a record: serial number, batch number, the checks you've done, the date and your signature. If you make a mistake, put one line through it, write the correction next to it, and initial and date it — never scribble it out or paint over it. The finished record comes to the Technical & Design Manager to check and sign off.
Testing and checking. In-process and final checks on each build, and electrical safety testing once we've trained you and you're confident with it. You'll only use equipment that's in date for calibration, and you'll check parts in against the order when deliveries arrive.
Speaking up. If something doesn't match, a part looks wrong or damaged, or you're just not sure — stop, put it to one side so nobody else picks it up by mistake, and come and tell us.
Servicing and repairs. Devices come back to us for servicing or repair. You'll note what condition they arrived in, what you did, what you replaced and how it tested.
Making probes, over time. Once you're trained and we've both agreed you're ready, you'll start making our surgical probes. Nobody arrives knowing how to do this — we'll teach you.
General workshop work. Deliveries in, stock, packing and despatch paperwork, and keeping the bench and workshop in good order.
