Role Purpose

The R&D Technical Consultant is responsible for managing the technical preparation of clients' R&D Tax Relief claims, from initial handover through technical investigation, report preparation, quality assurance and progression towards submission.

The role requires the Consultant to lead detailed technical discussions with business owners, directors, engineers, developers and other Competent Professionals to identify qualifying R&D activities and translate complex project information into clear, robust and compliant technical narratives.

A fundamental responsibility of the role is to ensure that claims prepared by RD Tax Group accurately represent the client's activities and are supported by sufficient technical evidence.

Key ResponsibilitiesClient & Technical Meetings

· Take ownership of clients following the formal Sales-to-Delivery handover.

· Review all available client information before the Technical Meeting.

· Introduce yourself to the client and establish yourself as their principal technical contact.

· Lead structured Technical Meetings with clients and relevant technical personnel.

· Identify the appropriate Competent Professional(s), Project Leads and Technical Leads.

· Investigate each potential R&D project in sufficient depth to determine whether it should be included within the claim.

· Ask appropriate follow-up and challenge questions rather than simply accepting information presented by the client.

Technical Investigation

· Establish project names, start and end dates, leadership and project objectives.

· Understand why each project commenced and the scientific or technological advancement sought.

· Identify scientific or technological uncertainties and why existing baseline knowledge or capability was insufficient to readily deduce a solution.

· Document research, design iterations, testing, experimentation, prototypes, failures, modifications and alternative solutions.

· Establish the final project outcome, whether uncertainties were resolved and whether further development is anticipated.

· Distinguish genuine qualifying R&D activity from routine development, commercial challenges and other non-qualifying activity.

Technical Report Preparation

· Convert information gathered during Technical Meetings into structured technical narratives.

· Clearly explain the advancement sought, associated uncertainties and why resolution was not readily deducible.

· Describe the systematic work undertaken to overcome the uncertainties.

· Obtain additional information or evidence where the initial discussion is insufficient.

· Submit reports for peer review and QA and respond constructively to feedback.

· Maintain appropriate document version control.

Client Communication

· Ensure the client receives a Technical Meeting follow-up within 24 hours.

· Summarise projects discussed, proposed claim projects, outstanding information, agreed actions and deadlines.

· Confirm cost apportionments agreed with the Cost Consultant where applicable.

· Maintain momentum throughout the engagement and ensure clients understand their responsibilities.

Record Keeping & Compliance

· Maintain detailed and contemporaneous notes within Monday.com.

· Ensure the client's APE accurately reflects the current position of the engagement.

· Save supporting evidence and documentation within the appropriate G Drive folders.

· Maintain a clear audit trail of technical decisions.

· Escalate technical eligibility concerns to the Head of Delivery or Compliance Team.

· Ensure claims meet RD Tax Group's internal quality and compliance standards.

Key Performance Indicators

· Technical Reports completed within agreed timescales.

· Technical Meeting follow-up emails issued within 24 hours.

· First-time peer-review quality and QA pass rate.

· Accuracy and completeness of Monday.com records.

· Client satisfaction and engagement turnaround time.

· Quality of supporting evidence and appropriate exclusion of non-qualifying activity.

Essential Skills & Experience

· Excellent investigative and analytical skills with strong technical curiosity.

· Ability to understand unfamiliar technologies and business processes.

· Excellent written English and ability to translate complex technical information into clear narratives.

· Confidence interviewing senior technical professionals and business owners.

· Excellent questioning, listening, organisational and time-management skills.

· Ability to manage multiple client engagements simultaneously.

· Experience within R&D Tax Relief is highly desirable; appropriate technical, engineering, scientific, software, manufacturing or professional-services backgrounds may also be considered.
