Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Clinical Director to lead the clinical delivery, governance and continuous improvement of our specialist community care services.

Our organisation supports people with acquired brain injuries, spinal injuries and other complex needs. Care packages range from hourly and overnight support to high-acuity, multidisciplinary packages involving large teams and 2:1 care. We also support clients with community access, education, holidays in the UK and abroad, and other activities that promote independence and quality of life.

The Clinical Director will provide visible clinical leadership across the organisation, ensuring that every client receives safe, effective, person-centred and evidence-based care. Working closely with the Managing Director and senior leadership team, the postholder will combine strategic oversight with practical clinical involvement.

Key responsibilities

Clinical leadership and governance

• Lead the organisation’s clinical strategy and governance framework.
• Maintain oversight of clinical quality, safety, outcomes and client experience.
• Ensure care is person-centred, evidence-based and responsive to each client’s needs, preferences and goals.
• Chair or contribute to clinical governance, risk, safeguarding and quality meetings.
• Develop, review and implement clinical policies, procedures and standards.
• Promote an open culture in which staff feel able to raise concerns, learn from incidents and continually improve practice.
• Provide expert clinical advice to senior leaders, operational teams, clients, families and external professionals.

Assessment and care delivery

• Oversee the team that deliver comprehensive clinical assessments for prospective and existing clients.
• Ensure the clinical team’s care plans, risk assessments and clinical protocols are accurate, current and clearly understood.
• Determine whether proposed packages can be delivered safely and effectively.
• Support the business with the mobilisation of new complex-care packages, including recruitment profiles, competency requirements and clinical training.
• Review clients following significant changes in health, incidents, hospital admissions or changes to their support arrangements.
• Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and work collaboratively with commissioners, case managers, therapists, solicitors, families and other healthcare professionals.

Quality, safety and compliance

• Ensure services meet all applicable regulatory, professional and contractual requirements, including CQC standards where relevant.
• Maintain effective systems for clinical audit, incident reporting, medication safety, infection prevention, safeguarding and risk management.
• Oversee investigations into clinical incidents, complaints and concerns, ensuring that learning is identified and embedded.
• Monitor clinical performance indicators and provide clear reports to the Managing Director and senior leadership team.
• Support regulatory inspections, commissioner reviews and external audits.
• Ensure accurate, timely and confidential clinical record-keeping.

Workforce development

• Set and maintain clinical competency standards for nurses, healthcare assistants and support workers.
• Oversee clinical induction, mandatory training, competency assessment and ongoing professional development.
• Provide or coordinate clinical supervision, reflective practice and professional support to the clinical lead team.
• Support managers with clinical performance, capability and conduct matters.
• Identify training needs arising from client requirements, audits, incidents and changes in best practice.
• Develop confident, accountable clinical leaders throughout the organisation.

Safeguarding

• Provide senior leadership for adult and, where applicable, child safeguarding.
• Alongside the Registered Manager ensure safeguarding concerns are recognised, reported and managed promptly.
• Liaise appropriately with local authorities, commissioners and other statutory bodies.
• Promote a culture that protects clients’ rights, dignity, choice and wellbeing.

Strategic and commercial contribution

• Contribute to organisational strategy, service development and sustainable growth.
• Provide clinical input into tenders, proposals and the costing of complex-care packages.
• Build trusted relationships with clients, families, case managers, commissioners and professional partners.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen services and improve client outcomes.
• Represent the organisation at professional meetings, conferences and networking events where appropriate.
• Maintain an appropriate balance between clinical quality, workforce capacity and commercial sustainability.

Person specification

Essential

• Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.
• Substantial post-registration experience in a relevant clinical setting.
• Senior clinical leadership or management experience within community care, complex care, rehabilitation or a related service.
• Strong experience supporting people with acquired brain injury, spinal injury, neurological conditions or other complex needs.
• Demonstrable knowledge of clinical governance, safeguarding, risk management, medicines management and quality assurance.
• Experience developing care plans, clinical protocols and risk assessments.
• Experience leading clinical audits and managing incidents, complaints and investigations.
• Ability to assess and oversee high-acuity care packages, including packages requiring large teams or 2:1 support.
• Strong understanding of relevant regulatory and professional standards.
• Experience supervising, developing and assessing clinical staff.
• Excellent communication, leadership and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work effectively with clients, families and multidisciplinary professionals.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required.

Desirable

• Postgraduate qualification in neuroscience, rehabilitation, leadership, education or a related discipline.
• Experience in the personal-injury, case-management or medico-legal sector.
• Experience supporting clients in educational settings, during community activities or while travelling in the UK and abroad.
• Experience working within a growing independent healthcare provider.
• Recognised qualification in teaching, assessing, safeguarding or quality improvement.
• Experience preparing for and supporting CQC inspections.
