The Lead General Practitioner will provide high-quality clinical care alongside a defined leadership and management role within the organisation. The post holder will support the development, oversight and continuous improvement of chronic disease management systems, clinical quality, audit activity and service delivery across the practice(s).

This role is suited to an experienced GP with an interest in clinical governance, quality improvement and system-level working, who wishes to contribute to organisational leadership while maintaining regular clinical practice.

Key Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide safe, effective, and patient-centred general practice care in line with GMC standards, NICE guidance and local ICB policies.
• Undertake routine GP consultations (face-to-face, home visits , telephone and/or digital), including management of acute and long-term conditions.
• Contribute to continuity of care and proactive management of complex patients.
• Maintain accurate, timely and high-quality clinical records using the clinical system in use (EMIS).
• Participate in peer support, clinical discussions and learning events.

Leadership, Management and Quality Responsibilities

• Clinical Audit
• Design, oversee and support the delivery of regular clinical audits (e.g. quarterly), with a particular focus on long-term conditions such as COPD, asthma, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
• Ensure audits are conducted against agreed standards and result in meaningful action plans and re-audit cycles.
• Chronic Disease Management (System Level)
• Contribute to the development, review and optimisation of chronic disease management pathways and clinic models.
• Work closely with pharmacists, nurses and the wider MDT to ensure consistent, high-quality reviews aligned with national guidance and local priorities.
• Support the use of population health data, templates and recalls to improve outcomes.
• Quality Improvement
• Lead or contribute to quality improvement (QI) projects aimed at improving patient care, safety, access or efficiency.
• Embed QI methodology into routine practice where appropriate.
• Support the translation of learning into sustainable operational change.
• Clinical Governance
• Contribute to governance processes including significant event analysis, learning from complaints, and clinical risk management.
• Support a culture of openness, learning and continuous improvement.
• Multidisciplinary Team Support
• Provide clinical leadership and support to the MDT, including pharmacists, nurses, ACPs and HCAs.
• Offer guidance and supervision appropriate to role and experience (within agreed governance structures).

Additional Responsibilities

• Contribute to practice and organisational meetings as required.
• Support the implementation of new services or pathways aligned with organisational or ICB priorities.
• Maintain compliance with appraisal, revalidation and mandatory training requirements.
• Act as a positive ambassador for the organisation’s values and standards.

Person Specification

Essential

• Fully qualified GP with current GMC registration and licence to practise.
• Included on the NHS England GP Performers List.
• Evidence of ongoing CPD and engagement with appraisal and revalidation.
• Demonstrable interest or experience in clinical audit, quality improvement or service development.
• Strong understanding of long-term condition management in primary care.
• Excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills.

Desirable

• Previous experience in a clinical leadership, lead GP or governance role.
• Experience of supervising or supporting MDT clinicians.
• Familiarity with population health management and data-driven improvement.
• Additional qualifications or training in leadership, education or quality improvement.

Sessions and Time Allocation

• Total: 4 sessions management and up to 4 sessions clinical work per week (exact timetable to be agreed based on organisational need and the individual’s strengths).
• This is an on site role and you will be based at our HQ in Willesden for the management work, and one of our branch surgeries for the clinical work. There is a potential for occasional remote clinical work dependent on need.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months

Pay: £80.00-£100.00 per hour
