Overview is looking for an experienced Lead Electronics Engineer to join our hardware engineering team at our head office in Woking, Surrey.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a hands-on electronics leader to play a pivotal role in the delivery of innovative new product development projects. You’ll lead and grow our electronics engineering capability, working across the full product lifecycle — from requirements capture and architecture definition through to design, verification, production test planning and customer support. In this role, you’ll lead technical decision-making, support business-critical projects, work closely with internal and external stakeholders, and help drive continuous improvement across engineering processes, tools and delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership of the electronic engineering team. Ensuring the capability, capacity, process and tools in these groups meet the business needs.
- Capture of stakeholder requirements from internal and external customers for new products, variants or problem spaces.
- Formation, management and ownership of electronics system/subsystem:
- Definition and documentation of electronic architectures and trade off studies and obtaining agreement to these with the relevant stakeholders
- Comprehensive documentation of the specifications, compliance and verification processes ensuring designs are innovative, cost effective, fit for purpose and reliable.
- Effective use of CAD design tools (Altium, LTSpice, CAD trace calculators, Thermal calculation).
- Effective process selection, e.g. Soldering: reflow/vapor/wave, SMD/through hole, plating, via technology, testability, layer stack, thermal dissipation and conduction etc.
- Operational and legal compliance
- Developing validation test plans that fully test and prove pre-production hardware to guarantee the produced design meets the specifications.
- Developing production test plans, including equipment allocation, test jig design to ensure repeatability and maximise production yields.
- Support the Head of Hardware Engineering in driving the efficient use, and continuous improvement, of the Engineering and New Product Development business processes and tools.
- Interface directly with customers (internal and external) for both new product development as well as product support.
- Project and commercial management of outsourced partners including selection, preparation of requirements, Statements of Work, preparation of sub-contract agreements and performance management
- Work with the other functional leaders to ensure that new project proposals are accurately assessed in terms of project approach, deliverables, timescale, budget and resource requirements
- Supervising and conducting of test work both in-house and at external EMC test houses.
- Lead root cause analysis of production & design problems to a successful conclusion.
- Execution of research into new technologies for continuous improvement of performance and cost.
Personal Profile Mandatory
- 10+ years of experience in industry as an electronic design engineer designing complex integrated mechanical, electrical and software products.
- Experience in leadership roles on business-critical projects.
- Experience planning and working to schedules in rapid development cycles.
- Solid understanding of brushless motor design concepts.
- Design experience in one or more of the following:
- BLDC motor drive circuits.
- Video signal processing/management.
- Interfacing with sensors (optical/magnetic/temperature).
- Experience in analogue signal conditioning, protection circuitry and power supplies.
- Experience in delivering high-speed digital design.
- Experience in designing for and resolving EMC issues.
- Embedded software and firmware experience to support architectural design considerations, board bring-up, board proving and troubleshooting during integration.
- Expert at writing and managing requirements.
- Experience writing and executing test plans and managing integration, verification and qualification.
- Excellent communications skills and fluency in English – both spoken and written.
- Demonstrable initiative and leadership in problem solving.
- Experience in using Altium for schematic design and PCB layout.
Preferred
- Experience in the development of products for manufacture in low-mix-high-volume and high-mix-low-volume markets.
