Engineering Director – Capital Equipment / Machinery Manufacturing

£80,000-£100,000 + bonus of up to 15% + private healthcare & benefits.

Location: Greater Manchester

Are you an experienced engineering leader with a strong background in the design and manufacture of high-value capital equipment?

This is an opportunity to take responsibility for a multidisciplinary engineering function covering Mechanical Design, Electrical Engineering and Project Management. You will provide the strategic direction, technical leadership and operational structure needed to develop the team and improve the delivery of complex capital-equipment projects.

The role requires more than high-level strategic oversight. You will remain close enough to the engineering and project activity to understand the challenges, support your managers and team leaders, and provide informed technical direction when needed.

THE ROLE

As Engineering Director, you will:

  • Set and deliver the engineering strategy in line with the company’s wider objectives.
  • Lead and develop the Design, Projects, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering teams.
  • Oversee the engineering delivery of high-value capital-equipment projects.
  • Manage departmental capacity, workloads, priorities and resources.
  • Ensure projects meet the required technical, quality, commercial and delivery standards.
  • Introduce engineering best practices that improve productivity, consistency and efficiency.
  • Establish and manage departmental KPIs.
  • Strengthen engineering processes, design controls and project governance.
  • Recruit, mentor and develop employees at all levels of the engineering team.
  • Work closely with customers, sales, manufacturing, supply chain and third-party manufacturing partners.
  • Provide senior technical support when complex engineering or project challenges arise.
  • Contribute to wider business strategy and senior-management decision-making.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

You will need:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • More than five years’ engineering management or senior leadership experience.
  • A strong background in high-value capital equipment, special-purpose machinery or complex engineered products.
  • Proven experience leading and developing an engineering design office and multidisciplinary team.
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering design and project delivery.
  • Experience managing projects from concept and design through manufacture, installation and commissioning.
  • Strong resource planning, prioritisation and people-development skills.
  • The ability to combine strategic leadership with practical technical judgement.
  • A track record of improving engineering performance, processes and project delivery.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Chartered Engineer status would be beneficial but is not essential. Previous experience operating as an executive or main board member would also be advantageous.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • £80,000-£100,000 basic salary.
  • Annual bonus worth up to 15% of salary.
  • BUPA private healthcare.
  • Life assurance.
  • 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays.

If you are an experienced engineering leader who can develop people, strengthen engineering operations and improve the delivery of complex capital-equipment projects, we would be keen to hear from you.
