Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and organised General Practice Assistant (GPA) to support our GP practice with both routine administrative tasks and basic clinical duties. Working closely alongside our GPs and wider clinical team, you will play an important role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the practice and enhancing patient care.

The successful candidate will be required to complete a six-to-nine-month GPA training programme, delivered within the practice and supported by a named GP mentor.

The GPA framework covers five domains:

Clinical Domains

  • Care Certificate
  • Clinical Skills

Non-Clinical Domains

  • Communication
  • Administration
  • Managing Health Records

Upon successful completion of all five domains, you will be awarded a GP Assistant Skills Certificate.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative Support

A significant part of the GPA role involves providing administrative support to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the practice. Duties include:

  • Assisting with the patient triage system by reviewing patient requests and signposting patients to the most appropriate service or clinician.
  • Extracting and coding relevant information from clinical correspondence.
  • Processing and workflowing clinical letters requiring further medical input to the appropriate team members, such as medicines reconciliation and care plan updates following hospital admissions.
  • Completing basic non-opinion forms and preparing sections of forms for GP approval, including insurance forms, mortgage applications, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) forms, and other documentation as appropriate.
  • Supporting the Pharmacy Team with audits and monitoring of high-risk medications.

Clinical Support

The GPA also provides basic clinical support within their scope of practice. Duties may include:

  • Phlebotomy (taking blood samples)
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Urine dipstick testing
  • Sterilising equipment
  • Restocking clinical and consulting rooms
  • Leading on health promotion and patient education initiatives
  • Assisting with regular Infection Prevention and Control audits

About the Role

GPAs play a vital role in improving practice efficiency by undertaking routine clinical and administrative tasks. This enables GPs and nurses to focus on more complex patient care, helping to streamline patient flow, improve access to services, and enhance the overall patient experience.

Strong communication skills are essential, as the GPA will regularly liaise with patients, healthcare professionals, and external organisations.

The postholder will participate in an annual appraisal with their manager. Agreed performance and training objectives will be reviewed regularly to support professional development and meet the evolving needs of the practice.

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and multitask effectively
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good understanding of data protection, GDPR, and patient confidentiality
