Background

The Department of Mathematics conducts internationally excellent research across Representation Theory, Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Applications are invited for a two-year, full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Theoretical Physics group and work with Dr Andrea Guerrieri on the Royal Society-funded project S-matrix Bootstrap: a theoretical collider for particle physics . The postholder will benefit from the group’s broader research environment and collaborations across mathematical and theoretical physics.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will conduct original research in conformal bootstrap, semidefinite programming and related optimisation problems in theoretical physics. They will develop innovative directions connected with the Royal Society-funded S-matrix Bootstrap project, including practical applications of SDPB. They will contribute to seminars and conferences, assist with research student supervision where appropriate, publish and present high-quality research, build external collaborations, and contribute positively to the Department’s collegial and interdisciplinary research culture.

Person Specification

Applicants should have a PhD awarded, or a PhD thesis submitted, in Theoretical Physics, Mathematics or a closely related discipline. They should have knowledge of semidefinite programming methods, including practical experience using SDPB, and expertise in one or more relevant areas such as conformal field theory, conformal bootstrap, scattering amplitudes, S-matrix bootstrap or related mathematical physics. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and collaboratively and contribute positively to an inclusive research environment.

Additional Information

This post is offered on a permanent contract with an expected start date of 1 October 2026, reflecting the University’s commitment to providing greater stability for research staff. The role is funded through external research funding, which is currently confirmed for 24 months. Continued employment in this role will therefore be subject to the continuation or replacement of funding.
