Role Overview

Astral is seeking a Laboratory Technician to works on the maintenance of the lab environment as well as conducting experiments.

Reporting to the Science Department, this role will be focusing on the manual handing and assembling as well as upkeeping inventory and procurement of lab essentials. Assistance in the experimental set-up, data collection and analysis, as well as day-to-day operations.

This is a full-time position based in Boscombe, Bristol, with an on-site working arrangement.

Key Responsibilities

• Lab Maintenance: Ensuring day-to-day operation of the lab and maintenance of experiment devices and components (including gas cylinders, gas and vacuum systems, electronics, and high voltage components).
• Lab Inventory: Keeping inventory of lab equipment and consumables, including timely purchases, regular maintenance, and procuring appropriate suppliers.
• Conducting Experiments: Hands-on assembly, testing, monitoring experiments and instrumentation during operations, flagging anomalies and troubleshooting. This includes occasional night shift for reactor operation. Adhering to stringent safety protocols in a laboratory environment.
• Supporting data collection and analysis: Record and maintain accurate logs, calibration records and data outputs across diagnostic systems. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team for ongoing projects within the company and/or in collaboration with customers.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team for ongoing projects within the company and/or on the irradiation service with customers.

Key Skills & Qualifications

• Proven experience in manual handing as well as working in a laboratory environment.
• Experience in at least one of the following areas – (i) lab management, (ii) vacuum systems, (iii) gas cylinders, (iv) electronics, (v) manual handling and assembly, or (vi) optics.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Attention to detail in the lab inventory maintenance as well as quality control of lab equipment set up, with a hands-on and practical approach to problem solving.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with key stakeholders.
• Ability to problem solve creatively and effectively by taking the initiative.
• Willingness to work with sources of ionizing radiation.
• Willingness to participate in night shifts.

Desirable

• Experience in conducting experiments with high-energy particle physics equipment, such as particle accelerators, cyclotrons, or research reactors.
• Experience working with radiation.
• Familiarity with control software such as LabVIEW.

Pay: From £32,000.00 per year
