Full job description
Our Operations Division is dedicated to protecting the careers, reputations and financial interests of our members worldwide. As a Costs Negotiator, you will play a key role in delivering a trusted and valued legal costs service, ensuring claims are managed efficiently, fairly and in line with organisational standards and objectives.
Working as part of a collaborative Legal Costs team, you will manage a varied caseload of costs claims, supporting positive outcomes for both members and the membership fund. You will be responsible for analysing legal costs matters, negotiating settlements, preparing key costs documentation and helping to drive cost-effective claims resolution strategies.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with legal costs experience who is looking to develop their expertise within a supportive and professional environment. You'll have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge of costs law and procedure while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and exceptional member service.
Main Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of legal costs claims at various stages of development, effectively prioritising workload to meet deadlines and service standards.
- Negotiate lower-value inter partes costs schedules and bills, including drafting and preparing Points of Dispute where required.
- Support the file closure process, ensuring the timely settlement and payment of costs.
- Investigate and analyse facts, legal issues and quantum to develop effective strategies that drive claims towards resolution.
- Work closely with colleagues to reduce external legal costs spend by internalising work where appropriate and delivering a cost-effective service.
- Liaise with members, legal representatives and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure cases are handled efficiently and in members' best interests.
- Identify and report risks and incidents, ensuring compliance with internal policies, governance requirements and regulatory obligations.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, helping to enhance operational efficiency and member outcomes.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legal costs law, procedures, legislation and industry best practice.
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience within a legal costs, claims handling or legal environment, with a good understanding of the legal process.
- Proven ability to use IT systems as analytical and case management tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build effective professional relationships.
- Excellent analytical and numerical skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Well-organised and able to manage a varied caseload while meeting competing priorities and deadlines.
- Experience negotiating costs matters and preparing legal documentation, including Points of Dispute, would be advantageous.
- A Law Degree, LPC qualification or progression towards a Costs Lawyer qualification is desirable.
- Experience handling your own caseload, defendant clinical negligence costs disputes, fast-track costs, costs budgeting, fixed costs matters, or Part 7 and Part 8 proceedings would be beneficial.
- A proactive team player committed to professional development, continuous improvement, diversity and delivering excellent outcomes for members.
Closing Date 2 August 2026
Pay: £24,430.74-£31,410.95 per year
