Medical Receptionist

The Mounts Medical Centre, Northampton

Hours: 25–30 hours per week (part-time)

Salary: Competitive, depending on experience (from National Living Wage)

Job Overview

The Mounts Medical Centre is looking to recruit a friendly, enthusiastic, and reliable Medical Receptionist to join our busy and supportive practice team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to begin a career in general practice. Previous experience working in a GP surgery is not essential, as full training will be provided, including training in the SystmOne clinical system and all aspects of the reception role.

As the first point of contact for our patients, you will play an important role in providing a professional, caring, and efficient service, ensuring patients receive the support and assistance they need.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients and visitors in a friendly, professional, and compassionate manner.
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and deal with patient enquiries courteously and efficiently.
  • Book, amend, and cancel appointments using the practice clinical system.
  • Receive and process prescription requests in accordance with practice procedures.
  • Register new patients and update patient demographic information.
  • Signpost patients to the most appropriate clinician or service.
  • Process incoming and outgoing correspondence, both electronically and by post.
  • Maintain accurate patient records while ensuring strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Carry out general administrative duties including scanning, filing, photocopying, and document management.
  • Work closely with GPs, nurses, and the wider practice team to support the smooth running of the practice.
  • Help maintain a welcoming, safe, and organised reception environment.

Full Training Provided

Successful applicants will receive comprehensive on-site training, including:

  • Use of the SystmOne clinical system.
  • Telephone and reception skills.
  • Appointment booking and patient registration.
  • Medical confidentiality, information governance, and GDPR.
  • NHS primary care procedures and customer service.

Person Specification

We are looking for someone who:

Essential

  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Is friendly, approachable, and enjoys helping people.
  • Demonstrates empathy, patience, and professionalism.
  • Has good IT skills and is confident using computers.
  • Can work calmly and efficiently in a busy environment.
  • Is organised, reliable, and able to prioritise workload.
  • Has excellent attention to detail and maintains confidentiality.
  • Works well both independently and as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in reception, customer service, hospitality, retail, or administration.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Knowledge of NHS services or general practice (not essential).
  • Experience using SystmOne (not essential as full training will be provided).
