Clinic Appointment Booking Volunteer

Location: The Lambert, Thirsk

Hours: Flexible

Closing date: 18th September 2026

Brand: North Yorkshire Hospice Care

Introduction

We’re looking for a friendly and compassionate Outpatient Clinic Booking Volunteer to join our team and help make a real difference to patients and their families.

This is an important role within our hospice services. You’ll be one of the first points of contact for patients, helping them to arrange appointments for our outpatient services. Initially, you’ll support our Advance Care Planning service, with the opportunity to also support other clinics such as Breathing Space and Lymphoedema.

The role involves making telephone calls to patients, arranging and confirming appointments, answering straightforward questions and recording information accurately on our systems. You’ll use our electronic patient record system, SystmOne, as well as other IT systems, with full training and support provided.

Our outpatient services support people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families, providing specialist advice, care and support at different stages of their journey. Although this is a non-clinical role, your contribution will be incredibly important. A warm, friendly and reassuring telephone conversation can make a real difference to how a patient experiences their contact with the hospice.

You’ll be part of a welcoming and supportive team who will make sure you feel confident in your role. You’ll never be expected to deal with clinical questions or situations outside your role — our team will be there to support you and help when needed.

Whether you have previous experience in administration, healthcare, customer service or simply enjoy talking to and helping people, we’d love to hear from you.

What we’re looking for:

We’re looking for someone who is kind, approachable and a good listener, with a genuine desire to make a difference to people at an important time in their lives.

You don’t need to have worked in healthcare before, and you don’t need to have experience of working in a hospice. What matters most to us is your attitude, your compassion and your willingness to learn.

You’ll ideally be:

  • Comfortable speaking to people over the telephone and able to put people at ease.
  • Patient, friendly and understanding, particularly when speaking with people who may be anxious or upset.
  • Comfortable using a computer and willing to learn new IT systems, including SystmOne.
  • Organised and able to record information accurately.
  • Respectful of confidentiality and the importance of handling sensitive information appropriately.
  • Able to recognise when something is outside your role and feel comfortable asking a member of the team for help.
  • Reliable and happy to work as part of a friendly team.

Most importantly, you don’t have to have all the answers. We’ll provide the training, guidance and support you need to feel confident.

You’ll be joining a really friendly and supportive team where volunteers are valued as an important part of the hospice. Your time will directly help our clinical teams to focus on providing care, while ensuring patients receive a warm, welcoming and efficient service when they contact us.
