Medical Case Manager – Registered Nurse (RGN)

Ready to use your acute nursing experience in a completely different way?

We are recruiting for an experienced Registered Nurse to move into an exciting Medical Case Manager position, where you will use your clinical knowledge to assess and manage medical cases involving patients based overseas.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced A&E, ICU, ITU, HDU, CCU, Acute Medicine or Acute Surgical Nurse who wants to step away from traditional bedside nursing without stepping away from clinical decision-making.

Rather than delivering the care yourself, you'll be responsible for clinically assessing, planning and coordinating the patient's overall care journey.

You'll work just 4 days per week, receive a salary of £42,000–£45,000, move to hybrid working following your initial training period, and have opportunities to become involved in medical repatriations and patient escorts/flight nursing.

What will you actually be doing?

You'll manage medical cases involving individuals and their dependants who are living or working overseas.

A patient may become ill or injured abroad and require medical support. You'll review their symptoms, medical history, clinical reports and treatment plan, liaise with the patient and treating clinicians, assess the suitability of the care available locally and determine the most appropriate next steps.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Clinically assessing medical cases and developing appropriate management plans.
• Reviewing medical reports, investigations and treatment recommendations.
• Liaising with patients, doctors, hospitals and other healthcare professionals internationally.
• Monitoring ongoing cases and reassessing patients as their condition changes.
• Prioritising cases according to clinical need and risk.
• Coordinating referrals, appointments, investigations and ongoing treatment.
• Assessing whether appropriate treatment can safely continue locally.
• Supporting the coordination of medical evacuations and repatriations where appropriate.
• Assessing whether patients are medically fit to travel and identifying any clinical support required.
• Managing cases autonomously while recognising when escalation to the wider medical team is required.
• Supporting pre-travel medical screening, vaccinations and management of pre-existing conditions.

There are also opportunities for nurses within the team to undertake patient escorts / flight nursing, providing an additional opportunity to use your clinical experience outside the office environment.

What we're looking for:

You must be a Registered Adult Nurse (RGN) with a current NMC PIN.

Ideally, you'll have around 4 years of recent acute-care nursing experience, including several years within a critical-care environment or similar, such as:

A&E / Emergency Department | ICU | ITU | HDU | CCU | Acute Medicine | Acute Surgical Nursing

You should be confident in clinical assessment, recognising deterioration, prioritising patients, making evidence-based decisions and communicating effectively with doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Experience within medical assistance, repatriation, travel health, military healthcare, government healthcare or medical insurance would be advantageous, but is not essential.

Working pattern

This is a full-time position working 4 shifts per week, with the service operating between 8am and 10pm.

Shifts include:

8am–6pm | 10:30am–8:30pm | 12pm–10pm

There is approximately one weekend in four, with weekend and bank-holiday shifts shared across the team.

The first three months are office-based in Esher while you complete your training. Following this, the position moves to a hybrid working arrangement with approximately 60% office attendance, and some middle/late shifts can be worked from home.

Pay: Up to £45,000.00 per year
