Full job description
Trade the grey commute for stability, respect, and the beautiful coast.
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is inviting UK and Irish-trained House Officers (FY2+ / SHO) to join us. Find your pathway and move into a substantive, supportive role in a system that values your clinical expertise and your well-being. Discover what it’s like to work in one of the world’s most iconic clinical settings.
Why House Officers are Choosing New Zealand
- Contracted for Balance: Enjoy 6 weeks of annual leave plus 12 public holidays. Our rosters are built so you actually have the time to explore the landscapes you’ve seen on screen.
- Beat the Bottleneck: Experience a system designed for stability. While many global health systems face increasing placement pressure, New Zealand offers accredited rotations and consistent senior-led support, ensuring your time here is a productive period of clinical growth.
- Choose Your Setting: From the tertiary hubs of Auckland, Wellington, and Canterbury to the hands-on autonomy of our regional and rural districts, we offer positions across the entire country.
- Accredited Training: Work in sites that meet the standards of major colleges, ensuring your time in New Zealand is high-value experience toward your specialty.
- A Less Adversarial Environment: Experience a less adversarial practice environment thanks to New Zealand’s ‘no-fault’ ACC system—allowing you to focus on patient care rather than defensive medicine.
- Path to Residency: House Officers are on Tier 1 of the Green List. You can apply for New Zealand residency before you even board your flight—meaning you’ll enjoy access to domestic benefits making New Zealand a viable long-term home for your family, not just a stopover.
- Simplified Registration: Getting registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) is more straightforward than you might think:
o If you trained in the UK: Graduates who have completed their medical degree and FY1 in the UK typically qualify for the Competent Authority Pathway — a streamlined, fast-tracked route to a Provisional General Scope of practice.
o If you trained in Ireland: Graduates who have completed their medical degree and intern year, and hold current IMC general registration, typically qualify for the same Competent Authority Pathway.
A Competitive Global Package
We provide a comprehensive suite of benefits designed to support your life inside and outside the hospital:
- Competitive Salary: Base salaries (Year 2) range from ~£34,736 – £65,640 / ~€41,478 – €78,381.. These are total salaries based on your run category, meaning your rostered nights and weekends are already built into your pay.
- Security & Protection: We cover your professional indemnity insurance and provide employer pension contributions (at least 6% if eligible).
- Growth-Focused: Benefit from protected teaching time, dedicated study/exam leave, and specific funding for your continuing medical education (CME).
- Holistic Support: Dedicated well-being programs, relocation assistance, paid parental leave, and meals provided while on duty.
Key Requirements
- Grade: Internship complete at minimum (FY1 in the UK / intern year in Ireland).
- Registration: Eligibility for MCNZ registration.
