You will work on real-time systems supporting patient interactions across GP practices and clinics, developing the services, APIs and integrations behind conversational AI workflows. This is an opportunity to work on next-generation technology that helps improve patient access and reduce pressure on primary care teams.

Working closely with our CTO and wider development team, you will contribute to the architecture, performance and reliability of a fast-growing healthcare technology platform. You will build backend services, integrate with NHS and third-party systems, and help ensure our platform can operate securely and reliably at scale.

The successful candidate must have at least 5 years’ commercial software development experience, including strong practical experience with Node.js.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js.
  • Build the services and infrastructure powering our real-time AI voice platform.
  • Develop APIs and integrations that support conversational workflows and healthcare systems.
  • Work on event-driven systems handling telephony, streaming data and AI-generated responses.
  • Integrate with external platforms, including GP clinical systems, online consultation platforms and third-party APIs.
  • Help design systems capable of supporting large volumes of concurrent patient interactions.
  • Optimise backend services for performance, reliability, scalability and low latency.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues across development and production environments.
  • Contribute to decisions regarding system architecture, infrastructure and engineering best practices.
  • Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving development standards.
  • Work closely with product, operations and clinical teams to understand requirements and develop appropriate technical solutions.
  • Support the monitoring, maintenance and continued improvement of production systems.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and internal development processes.
  • Help ensure systems are developed in line with the security, privacy and reliability requirements of a healthcare environment.

Experience

  • At least 5 years’ commercial experience as a Software Developer
  • Strong commercial development experience using Node.js.
  • Experience designing and building scalable backend systems.
  • Experience developing and maintaining APIs and service integrations.
  • Experience working with distributed, real-time or event-driven systems.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as WebSockets, message queues or streaming services.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably AWS.
  • Strong understanding of SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
  • Experience integrating with external APIs and third-party systems.

  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and evolving technology environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work from our Borehamwood office at least three days per week.

Desirable

  • Experience with technologies such as Twilio, SIP or WebRTC.
  • Exposure to large language models, conversational AI or AI-driven workflows.
  • Experience building systems that process streaming or real-time data.
  • Experience working within healthcare or another regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of NHS primary care systems and workflows.
  • Experience integrating with systems such as EMIS, SystmOne or online consultation platforms.
  • Experience using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Experience with observability, logging, monitoring and production alerting.
  • Experience scaling high-availability production systems.
  • Knowledge of data protection, information security and privacy-by-design principles.
