Personal Assistant to Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science Student

Location: Weymouth, Dorset (DT3), with travel to Solent University, Southampton (SO14)
Pay: £17.05 per hour
Hours: 26 hours per week
Working Pattern: Tuesday 07:00 to 17:00, Wednesday 11:00 to 16:00 & Thursday 06:00 to 17:00
Start Date: ASAP
Holiday: 5.6 weeks' holiday pro rata
Driving Licence: Full, clean UK driving licence (essential)

Ask Jules is recruiting Personal Assistants (PAs) on behalf of our client, a second-year university student based in Weymouth, Dorset.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a PA team and provide personal, academic, social and independent living support to a university student. You will play an important role in helping our client make the most of university life, pursue his interests and achieve his goals.

No previous care experience is required as full training will be provided.

About Our Client

Our client will be starting his second year at Solent University in September, studying Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science.

He has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Crohn’s disease and uses a wheelchair full-time. He requires support with aspects of daily life, personal care, health and wellbeing, university and travelling to and from Southampton.

He has a joyful personality and a great sense of humour and is passionate about sport. He supports AFC Bournemouth and enjoys football, Formula 1 particularly McLaren and Lando Norris, cricket, tennis, boxing and darts. He also plays powerchair football.

Away from sport, he enjoys Star Wars, Lego, board and card games, baking, going to the cinema and watching everything from medical dramas to documentaries and entertainment programmes.

He also has a friendly cat called Monkey, so you will need to be comfortable around pets.

“I have Duchene Muscular Dystrophy and Crohn’s disease which means I am in a wheelchair full time. I have a cat called Monkey who is very friendly and loves lots of attention. I like to watch lots of medical dramas like Grey's Anatomy, Chicago Med and Casualty. I love watching Clarkson’s Farm, Masked Singer, The Voice, A League of their own and many sports documentaries like Welcome to Wrexham. I also enjoy going to the cinema and watching films of all different types. I love all things Star Wars including all the films and series.

I support AFC Bournemouth and go to most home games and some away games. I love sports – football, formula 1 (especially McLaren and Lando Norris), cricket, tennis, boxing and darts. I play powerchair football. I like to build Lego, especially Star Wars. I like to play card and board games like uno, exploding kittens, monopoly and ticket to ride.

I will need help with my hand exercises, getting into my stander, putting on my hand splints, and hydrotherapy so you will need to be good with being around water and being able to help when I have physio sessions regarding my standard and the maintenance. At University you will provide academic support and will come to all my lectures and seminars and take notes. I will also need you to get my books and laptop out of my bag and set the laptop up for me and type for me during lectures. I will also need assistance with gym, practical sessions and boccia and travelling to competitions”

What Does the Role Involve?

This is a varied role, with no two days necessarily being the same. You will support our client both at home and at university, as well as when travelling and enjoying his hobbies and interests.

Your duties will include:

• Driving our client in his adapted automatic vehicle
• Supporting him with commuting to and from university
• Providing personal care and assistance with daily activities
• Supporting with hand exercises, hand splints, standing and hydrotherapy
• Assisting during physiotherapy sessions and with equipment maintenance
• Providing academic support, including scribing and note-taking
• Attending lectures and seminars and assisting with his laptop and university equipment
• Supporting with gym sessions, practical university sessions and boccia
• Accompanying him to competitions and other activities
• Providing social support and companionship
