Ad Hoc Laboratory Technician – Northwest Region

Location: North West (predominantly Liverpool, Cheshire, Warrington and the West Midlands)
Job Type: Ad Hoc / Casual
Salary: £13.41 Per Hour

About BioGrad Education

BioGrad Education is looking for enthusiastic and reliable Laboratory Technicians to join our bank of ad hoc staff, supporting the delivery of practical science courses across the North West. This flexible role is ideal for candidates with laboratory experience who enjoy practical science, working with learners and travelling to different teaching locations.

The Role

You will prepare laboratories, maintain equipment and support lecturers and students during practical science courses, ensuring laboratories are safe, organised and fully equipped.

Key ResponsibilitiesLaboratory Preparation & Support

· Prepare laboratories before practical teaching sessions.

· Prepare, label and aliquot laboratory reagents.

· Maintain mammalian cell lines and bacterial stocks where required.

· Set up laboratory equipment and consumables.

· Support lecturers during practical sessions.

· Assist students with PCR, Cell Culture, Western Blotting, ELISA, Microbiology, Serial Dilutions and Molecular Biology techniques.

· Prepare and pack away laboratories before and after courses.

Laboratory Maintenance

· Maintain laboratory cleanliness and organisation.

· Monitor stock levels and order consumables.

· Receive deliveries and manage laboratory stock.

· Dispose of laboratory waste safely.

· Report equipment faults promptly.

Health & Safety

· Work in accordance with COSHH, SOPs and Health & Safety legislation.

· Complete COSHH documentation and support risk assessments.

· Ensure PPE is available and used correctly.

· Monitor student safety during practical sessions.

· Follow emergency procedures for spills and fire evacuations.

Administration

· Maintain laboratory records.

· Assist with inventories and stock records.

· Complete relevant administrative duties as required.

Essential Criteria

· Minimum 3 GCSEs (Grade 4/C or above) including English, Maths and Science.

· A Level in Biology, Chemistry or related science (or equivalent experience).

· Previous laboratory experience in education, industry or research.

· Excellent practical laboratory skills and attention to detail.

· Strong communication and organisational skills.

· Good Microsoft Office skills.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Criteria

· Level 3 or Level 5 Laboratory Technician qualification.

· Experience supporting practical science teaching.

· Experience in molecular biology or mammalian cell culture.

· First Aid qualification or willingness to train.

Driving Requirement (Essential)

Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to their own reliable vehicle. Regular travel between teaching venues across Liverpool, Cheshire, Warrington and the West Midlands is an essential part of this role.

Working Pattern

This is an ad hoc/casual position with work offered according to business needs. Flexibility to work weekdays and occasional evenings or weekends is essential.
