Job Title: Anatomical Pathology Technician

Grade: Band 5

Trust: East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Location: Ipswich Hospital

Ward: Mortuary

Pay Rates: £18.66 per hour

Shift Patterns: Monday to Friday 08:00 – 16:00

Do you have the precision of a surgeon and the curiosity of a scientist?
Join East Suffolk & North Essex NHS Foundation Trust as an Anatomical Pathology Technician and play a vital role in delivering high-quality post-mortem services that support patient care, and medical education.

What you can add:

  • Maintain the day-to-day operation of the mortuary, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, safety, dignity and compliance with legal, HTA and Trust requirements, including participation in the out-of-hours on-call service.
  • Prepare and assist with post-mortem examinations, including specimen handling, tissue processing, body reconstruction, photography, teaching support, and organ and tissue donation procedures.
  • Supervise junior staff and visitors, provide training and mentoring to technical staff, porters and trainee pathologists, and contribute to ongoing professional development and service improvement.
  • Support bereaved relatives and coordinate the identification and release of the deceased, liaising with coroners, police, funeral directors, transplant services and internal teams, while maintaining accurate records and documentation.

What you’ll need:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (or equivalent) with proven post-qualification experience in post-mortem work, including forensic examinations
  • Experience of safe manual handling of the deceased and preparation for post-mortem examination
  • Knowledge of post-mortem dissection techniques and relevant Health & Safety regulations, including infection control and hazardous substances
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and professionally with bereaved or distressed families
  • Ability to work independently, remain calm under pressure, and demonstrate emotional resilience in challenging situations
  • Ability to supervise, train and provide instruction to junior staff and trainees
