An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) to join a well-established and expanding surgical team in Scotland. This role is ideal for an enthusiastic consultant with broad experience in general Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with a special interest in Head & Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery, though not essential. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of consultants delivering high-quality elective and emergency OMFS services across the region.


Main Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) services across the region.
  • Provide assessment and treatment for elective and emergency OMFS patients.
  • Participate in the management of facial trauma, dentoalveolar surgery and general OMFS cases.
  • Contribute to the Head & Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery service where appropriate.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, including ENT, Oncology, Pathology, Restorative Dentistry and Allied Health Professionals.
  • Participate in regular Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings.
  • Support service development, innovation and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provide teaching and supervision for trainees in medicine and dentistry.
  • Participate in departmental audit, research and clinical governance activities.
  • Provide consultant cover during colleagues' annual leave and authorised absences.
  • Participate in the 1:5 Consultant on-call rota, including weekends and weekdays.

Department & Facilities

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department is well-equipped and provides a comprehensive regional service. Facilities include:

  • Six outpatient consultation rooms
  • Dedicated ultrasound suite
  • Minor operating theatre for local anaesthetic and sedation procedures
  • Dedicated Maxillofacial Laboratory supporting both analogue and digital reconstructive workflows
  • Close access to Radiology, Oncology and main operating theatres
  • d inpatient ward with ENT services

The service also provides specialist outreach clinics across multiple hospitals throughout the region, supporting patients closer to home while maintaining strong links with tertiary services.


Clinical Services

The department delivers a comprehensive range of oral and maxillofacial services, including:

  • General Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Head & Neck Oncology
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Facial Trauma
  • Facial Deformity Surgery
  • Oral surgery referrals
  • Multidisciplinary cancer care
  • Emergency OMFS services
  • Elective surgical services

Diagnostic & Surgical Support

The successful consultant will have access to excellent diagnostic and surgical facilities, including:

  • CT imaging
  • MRI
  • PET scanning
  • Cone Beam CT
  • Dedicated Maxillofacial Laboratory
  • Modern reconstructive planning technologies
  • Comprehensive theatre facilities for major and minor surgery

Multidisciplinary Working

A key aspect of this role is collaborative working with a wide multidisciplinary team, including:

Leadership, Governance & Service Development

The successful consultant will be expected to:

  • Participate actively in Clinical Governance meetings.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to departmental leadership and service management.
  • Participate in audit and governance programmes.
  • Maintain compliance with Health & Safety policies.
  • Support ongoing development of the OMFS service.

Teaching & Professional Development

The department has a strong commitment to education and encourages consultants to:

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
  • Supervise junior medical and dental staff.
  • Participate in research and audit.
  • Maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Engage fully in annual appraisal and revalidation.
  • Undertake study leave supported by an educational budget.

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

  • Fully registrable with the General Dental Council (GDC) and fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • On the GMC Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, or within six months of eligibility.
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (or equivalent).
  • Fellowship or Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (or equivalent).
  • Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (or equivalent).
  • Current ATLS Provider Certificate.
  • Successful completion of an approved 5-year OMFS training programme, or within six months of completion.
  • Ability to independently manage the full range of OMFS patients.
  • Excellent leadership, organisational and communication skills.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, audit and continuing professional development.
  • Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Ability to apply research evidence to clinical practice.

Desirable

  • Special interest in Head & Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • ATLS Trainer status.
  • Higher academic qualifications (BSc, MSc, MD/MS, MDS or PhD).
  • Management training.
  • Experience supervising postgraduate research.
  • Peer-reviewed publications.
  • Database management experience.
  • Full UK driving licence.
