Full job description
Role Purpose
The Sonographer will provide safe, professional and client-centred non-diagnostic baby ultrasound scanning services within a private baby ultrasound studio. The role focuses on delivering souvenir, bonding and keepsake ultrasound experiences while maintaining clear boundaries that these scans are not a replacement for NHS or private diagnostic antenatal screening. The post holder will ensure every client receives accurate information, appropriate consent, excellent care and a high-quality studio experience.
Key Responsibilities
· Perform non-diagnostic baby ultrasound scans in line with studio protocols, professional standards and current safety guidance.
· Provide a welcoming, calm and professional experience for expectant parents and their invited guests.
· Clearly explain the purpose and limitations of non-diagnostic souvenir scans before the appointment begins.
· Obtain and record informed consent before carrying out each scan.
· Capture appropriate 2D, 3D or 4D images and video clips in accordance with the service booked and studio procedures.
· Maintain a non-diagnostic scope of practice and avoid offering clinical reassurance, diagnosis, screening results or medical interpretation.
· Identify when a client should be advised to contact their midwife, GP, maternity triage, early pregnancy unit or emergency services, in line with escalation procedures.
· Follow local policies for situations where the scan cannot be completed, where image quality is limited, or where the client raises a clinical concern.
· Maintain accurate records of appointments, consent, scan type, gestational age, limitations discussed and any advice to seek clinical care.
· Ensure ultrasound equipment is used appropriately, safely and in accordance with manufacturer guidance and clinic protocols.
· Support cleanliness, infection prevention and studio readiness between appointments.
· Work collaboratively with reception, photography, administration and management colleagues to ensure a smooth client journey.
· Participate in training, quality assurance, audit, incident reporting and continuous improvement activities.
Qualifications and Experience
· Recognised ultrasound qualification, ideally a CASE-accredited Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in Medical/Clinical Ultrasound, or equivalent relevant training and competency.
· Experience in obstetric ultrasound, private baby scanning, maternity ultrasound or a closely related ultrasound environment.
· Current professional registration where applicable, such as HCPC registration as a radiographer, NMC registration as a midwife or nurse, GMC registration as a doctor, or evidence of relevant professional background and indemnity arrangements.
· Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development relevant to ultrasound safety, pregnancy scanning, consent, communication and professional practice.
· Knowledge of the distinction between diagnostic antenatal ultrasound and non-diagnostic souvenir or bonding scans.
· Understanding of CQC expectations, safeguarding responsibilities, confidentiality, infection prevention and client safety within a private healthcare or wellness setting.
Person Specification
· Warm, professional and confident communication style.
· A strong client-care focus with the ability to create a positive and reassuring studio experience without providing clinical diagnosis or medical reassurance.
· Excellent attention to detail in image capture, record keeping and consent documentation.
· Ability to manage sensitive conversations and signpost clients appropriately when concerns arise.
· Calm and organised approach in a busy appointment-based environment.
· Commitment to safe practice, professional boundaries, confidentiality and safeguarding.
· Reliable, flexible and able to work evenings, weekends or variable shifts if required.
Safety, Governance and Compliance
The post holder must work within the studio’s defined non-diagnostic service model and must not present souvenir scans as a substitute for routine NHS or private diagnostic pregnancy scans. The Sonographer is expected to follow all studio procedures relating to consent, ultrasound safety, infection prevention, client confidentiality, safeguarding, incident reporting, complaints handling and escalation to maternity or emergency services where appropriate.
Working Conditions
· Appointment-based studio environment with direct client contact.
· Will involve evening, weekend and bank holiday working d
· Requires safe operation of ultrasound equipment and regular cleaning of equipment and client areas.
· Requires professional conduct and customer service standards.
