Summary
About us
Dyson is a global technology company driven by engineering, innovation and a passion for solving problems others ignore. We challenge convention to create market-leading products that are different and better, continuously refining ideas from concept through to mass production. Within our world-class Research, Design and Development (RDD) department, we identify and develop new technologies, working closely with NPI teams and technical specialists to integrate them into future products for global markets. We foster a culture of creativity, collaboration and bold thinking, where individuals are encouraged to challenge ideas, learn from mistakes and pursue better solutions.
About the role
As a Mechanical Research Engineer within the Home Research team, you will be working alongside an innovative & dynamic team, supporting the realisation and growth of our Home categories. As part of our world class research, design and development (RDD) department, you will have the opportunity to work alongside leading technical specialists and highly creative engineers to create industry leading and game-changing products.
Within the Home Research Expansion team, you will be focussed on the discovery and development of new disruptive technologies and products to change the Floorcare market landscape, as well as identifying new technologies to help Dyson move into new adjacent categories. This will involve technical leadership of fundamental investigative and technology/product development type projects, taking concepts from ideation to proof of concept.
As part of the role, you will focus on identifying new technologies, developing both plans and rigs for investigative testing and use data to support product-level decisions and to support the iterative development of sub-systems and full product solutions. To achieve this, you will need to have a strong technical engineering background, excellent attention to detail whilst moving at pace and outstanding focus on quality and process of technical delivery and documentation.
You will need to collaborate as part of a global team, engaging with our category & support teams to help define requirements and deliver solutions.
You will role model the Dyson values and help create a high-performance culture.
Responsibilities include:
-
New Floorcare and adjacent Home product technology development.
-
Contributing to robust and coherent integration of innovative technologies through collaboration with product teams.
-
Applying theory, data & intuition to make sound design & engineering judgements & proposals.
-
Design and build functional prototype products suitable for testing, review and demonstration to senior level stakeholders.
-
Identifying, prioritising, and managing risk to deliver design engineering solutions or technologies on time, cost, and spec.
-
Contributing to the development of the team’s capability & growth by providing constructive feedback to line-managers, as well as mentoring and line managing more junior members of the team.
-
Ideate and develop innovative concepts to drive step change development across Dyson Floorcare and adjacent Home product categories.
-
Actively understand consumer problems and technology trends within markets, using them to drive innovative solutions.
-
Create technical documentation, including specifications, test plans, functional prototypes and research reports.
-
Perform and review analysis on performance tests and develop efficient solutions to improve.
-
Take an active, hands-on role to ensure that all engineering problems are resolved thoroughly.
About you
-
A degree in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline or equivalent.
-
A creative and considered approach to problem solving, following clear design processes and using analytical skills, alongside engagement with intellectual property processes.
-
Knowledge and understanding of a broad range of engineering and technological disciplines, with examples of how you have utilised those to develop great products or technologies and make robust design decisions.
-
Practical knowledge of 3D CAD, PLM systems and analysis packages.
-
Ideally, an ability and desire to develop electro-mechanical prototypes using microcontrollers, sensors and actuators.
-
Experience in collaborating with a team and influencing others to successfully deliver results on time.
-
Identification and management of requirements and specifications throughout the design and technology development process.
-
Ability to robustly plan and prioritise tasks
-
Effective assessment and choice of appropriate methods to develop and demonstrate technologies.
-
Ability to analyse and evaluate test results to verify, validate and drive design direction via excellent communication within your team and across a business.
-
A demonstrable desire to constantly improve yourself including evidence of self-development.
