Full job description

We lead the UK’s diplomatic, development and consular work around the world. We employ around 17,000 staff in our global network of 281 offices worldwide. Our UK-based staff work in King Charles Street in London, Abercrombie House in East Kilbride and in Milton Keynes.

Your role with us

Our Public Facing Services department provides Consular services to British nationals and other members of the public and handles hundreds of thousands of enquiries and applications a year. The department is dynamic, innovative and fast moving, and offers a range of essential services that are unavailable anywhere else. When you join us here at Hanslope Park, you’ll have a unique opportunity to work as a member of a friendly, professional and collaborative team.

Main purpose of the job

As a Public Facing Services Officer, you’ll be responsible for following set FCDO polices and procedures as you process applications across five service streams. Providing help and guidance, answering queries and resolving issues, you’ll work professionally and within agreed timeframes to deliver an excellent customer service. The streams you’ll focus on involve:

  • Directly supporting British Nationals and others by quickly and accurately processing legalisation applications
  • Processing overseas birth and death registration applications, and issuing certificates
  • Handling overseas cases, ensuring the relevant authorities consent to the taking of evidence from their territory via video link
  • Processing service of process cases, ensuring court documents are served overseas via diplomatic channels
  • Assessing applications from overseas students who wish to study in the UK

Who we’re looking for

To be a success in this important role you should be capable of working at pace and completing your tasks to an extremely high standard, while your strong interpersonal and communication skills will allow you to work efficiently as a key member of a busy, collaborative team. A proficient user of the Microsoft Office suite of software, you’ll possess good organisational, analytical and planning skills, and be ready to work to tight deadlines.

This is a role where you’ll be expected to make decisions and propose solutions to a wide range of issues, so we’ll also expect you to be a confident problem solver with a proactive approach to your work.

Please be aware that you must be a British Citizen at the time of application and be required to attain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance. For more information about this process, click here.

We value diversity and inclusion and actively encourage and welcome applications from all communities. Everyone here gets the support to develop their skills and capabilities as well as benefits that help to make the most of life in and out of work, including a Civil Service pension.

Use your talent and experience to shape our nation’s future, and deliver tangible improvements to millions of lives, including your own.

Closing date: 28 September 2026.
