Microbiologist - Sittingbourne

Are you a detail-oriented scientist with a passion for microbiology and quality? We're looking for a Microbiologist to join our busy laboratory in Sittingbourne, where you'll play a key role in delivering accurate, high-quality microbiological analysis for our clients.

Working as part of an experienced laboratory team, you'll perform a range of microbiological testing activities, maintain the highest standards of quality and safety, and contribute to the smooth running of the laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with practical microbiology experience who enjoys working in a fast-paced, quality-driven environment.

Days Per Week: 4 on 4 off - 9am to 9pm
Contract: Full Time & Permanent
Annual Salary: £28,267 + £2000 Location Allowance

The Day to Day

  • Carry out microbiological analysis in accordance with documented methods and procedures, ensuring no deviations from approved methodologies.
  • Perform plate counting, organism identification and confirmation testing.
  • Accurately enter, review and approve laboratory results within agreed turnaround times and client deadlines.
  • Maintain high standards of quality control and ensure analytical data meets ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 requirements.
  • Communicate any technical issues, concerns or delays to the laboratory management team promptly.
  • Ensure laboratory areas are clean, organised and maintained to the highest housekeeping standards, including correct waste disposal.
  • Monitor laboratory stock levels and notify management when replenishment is required.
  • Complete all laboratory records accurately, clearly and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Provide practical and theoretical microbiology training in line with documented methods where required.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures, including PPE requirements, and contribute to a positive safety culture by reporting incidents, near misses and unsafe practices.

The Essentials

  • Five GCSEs (or equivalent), including Science, English and Mathematics.
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of microbiological testing across a range of methodologies and procedures.
  • Strong analytical, numerical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality results.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload and work independently.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office applications and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • A commitment to quality, continuous improvement and maintaining high laboratory standards.
