FREELANCE SOUND ENGINEER / CREATIVE STUDIO LEAD
KL Creative Studios CIC | King’s Lynn
The opportunity
KL Creative Studios CIC is a growing community creative organisation bringing together music, recording, film, photography, podcasting, art, sensory experiences and creative development under one roof.
We are currently developing a number of new projects with local organisations and community partners, with eight or nine organisations already looking to work with us to deliver creative services.
As this programme continues to grow, we are looking for a Freelance Sound Engineer / Creative Studio Lead to join us on a project-by-project basis, with the potential for the role to develop into a more regular position for the right person.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants to do more than simply provide technical support. We are looking for someone who can bring ideas, initiative and creativity to the studio and potentially help shape and develop the services we offer.
About KL Creative Studios
KL Creative Studios is a multi-purpose creative space designed to make music, media and creative opportunities accessible to the wider community.
Our facilities include:
- Music recording studio
- Film and video space
- Photography studio
- Podcasting facilities
- Sensory room
- Function room
- Rehearsal and practice space
- Art and creative rooms
- Community and workshop spaces
We work with young people, families, artists, community groups and partner organisations, including people who are neurodivergent and individuals who may face barriers to accessing traditional creative opportunities.
Who we’re looking for
This opportunity could suit a range of people.
You might be:
- A recent graduate looking for practical industry experience
- Starting out in sound engineering or music production
- An established freelance sound engineer or producer
- A musician with strong technical and recording skills
- An experienced creative professional with some spare capacity
- Someone looking to return to the creative industries
- Someone looking to develop a freelance career
- Or an experienced professional who wants to use their skills within a community-focused organisation
You don’t need to tick every box.
We are particularly interested in people who are reliable, creative, approachable and willing to get involved.
Technical ability matters, but so does your ability to communicate with people, particularly young people and participants who may need patience, encouragement or flexibility.
We particularly welcome neurodivergent applicants
As a neurodivergent-focused creative organisation, we understand that people don’t all work, communicate or learn in the same way.
We especially welcome applications from neurodivergent people.
If you have ADHD, autism, dyslexia or another form of neurodivergence, we want you to know that you don’t need to fit yourself into a particular mould to work with us.
We are interested in your skills, creativity, perspective and what you can bring to the studio.
We will also consider reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment and working process where required.
Key responsibilities
Depending on your experience and the projects involved, responsibilities may include:
- Setting up and operating recording and audio equipment
- Recording, editing, mixing and producing audio
- Supporting music recording sessions and rehearsals
- Podcast production and audio editing
- Providing sound support for film and multimedia projects
- Audio post-production, including editing, EQ, noise reduction and effects
- Supporting live sound and community events
- Working with young people, artists and community groups
- Helping clients and participants get the best from the studio
- Supporting the day-to-day operation of the creative spaces
- Assisting with bookings and project coordination
- Supporting promotional activity and content creation
- Developing new creative services and project ideas
- Working with external organisations and delivery partners
- Maintaining equipment, files and project records
The role may evolve as our programme develops, so flexibility and initiative are highly valued.
Skills and experience
Experience in some or all of the following would be beneficial:
- Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs)
- Recording and mixing
- Live sound
- Studio equipment and microphone techniques
- Podcast production
- Music production
- Audio for film and video
- Basic video editing
- Content creation
- Photography or multimedia production
- Adobe Creative Cloud or similar creative software
Most importantly, we want someone who is comfortable learning, solving problems and working independently.
Safeguarding
As our work involves children, young people and vulnerable adults, applicants must already hold an Enhanced DBS certificate or be willing to undergo an Enhanced DBS check.
The successful applicant will also be expected to follow KL Creative Studios CIC’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
What makes this opportunity different?
We are building something.
The immediate requirement is to support projects coming into the studio over the next few weeks, but there is potential for this to develop considerably further.
For the right person, there may be opportunities to:
Lead projects.
Develop new services.
Build relationships with partner organisations.
Run creative sessions.
Manage aspects of the studio.
Develop your own creative work.
And potentially build a longer-term role around your skills.
If you have an entrepreneurial mindset and can see opportunities that we haven’t thought of yet, that’s a big plus.
We want people who look at the facilities, the organisations we work with and the opportunities coming through the door and think:
“There’s something here. I could help build this.”
What we offer
- Paid freelance project work
- Flexible opportunities
- Access to a professional creative environment
- Hands-on experience across multiple disciplines
- Opportunities to work with community organisations and creative partners
- The chance to build your portfolio and professional network
- Potential for ongoing project work
- Potential to develop a wider role within the organisation
Interested?
If you think you could bring something to KL Creative Studios, we’d like to hear from you.
Send us a short introduction telling us who you are, what you can do, your experience, and what you’d like to get involved with.
A full CV is welcome, but we’re also happy to hear from people who are just starting out.
This isn’t simply an opportunity to pick up some freelance hours.
For the right person, it could be an opportunity to become part of something that’s growing.
