About the role

What does the average day look like?

In an average day at Network Rail, the role sits at the heart of sustainability reporting, working with teams across the business to challenge data, strengthen insights and ensure reporting is accurate, complete and decision-ready. It involves leading on regulatory submissions, engaging key stakeholders and driving compliance with confidence. From assuring data and forecasting to producing the sustainability scorecard, the role provides technical expertise that shapes targets and performance. It also includes benchmarking progress, developing meaningful KPIs, responding to critical information requests, and supporting teams to understand risks and opportunities, turning data into action and driving continuous improvement across the organisation.

Our Sustainability Reporting team sits at the centre of Network Rail's sustainability strategy, bringing together data, insight and expertise to drive informed decision making. We are a collaborative, forward-thinking group that works closely with teams across the business to ensure performance is accurately measured, reported and continuously improved.

The team combines technical knowledge with a practical, solutions-focused approach, providing trusted challenge and support to stakeholders at all levels. With a strong focus on innovation and improvement, we play a key role in helping Network Rail meet its commitments to deliver a greener railway that is fit for the future, cares for the environment and helps communities thrive.

Your experience and skills

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for a confident and analytical sustainability professional who thrives on turning complex data into clear, actionable insight. You'll bring strong experience in reporting, data assurance and performance analysis, with the ability to challenge assumptions and influence stakeholders at all levels. A keen eye for detail is essential, alongside a solid understanding of regulatory and corporate reporting requirements. The ideal candidate is proactive, organised and comfortable managing multiple priorities, with the credibility to engage senior stakeholders and drive agreement. Strong communication skills are key, as is the ability to translate technical information into meaningful narratives that support decision making. A continuous improvement mindset, curiosity and a passion for sustainability will set you apart in this role.


Essential Criteria

¿ Degree level qualification (minimum UK level 6) in either sustainability or a numerate discipline (or equivalent through experience)

¿ Detailed knowledge of good practice data analysis and reporting / presentation processes and techniques

¿ Demonstrable knowledge and experience of sustainability and / or environmental management

¿ Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrable experience in providing data and performance reports

¿ Confident influencing and challenging colleagues and stakeholders from across a large business at all levels.

¿ Excellent presentation skills with an excellent 'eye for detail' and proof-reading

¿ Advanced user of IT software including Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel


Desirable

¿ Broad knowledge of railway systems

¿ Practitioner member of relevant professional organisation (such as the Institute of Environment and Sustainability Professionals ISEP).

¿ Knowledge of Power BI / Power Apps
