Full job description

You will need to possess good communication skills, work well as part of a team and have the ability to work in an extremely busy and challenging environment. We are committed to providing a high standard of care to our patients using a multidisciplinary approach. You will provide a Portering service in a role that consists of patient transfers and item movement. Yo may need to communicate with not only colleagues but also patients. Support from Supervisor will be provided as necessary.

The Portering Department currently has vacancies at Walsall Manor Hospital.

General Portering role working carious hours. The Portering department provide the Trust with a 24/7 service.

We are looking for individuals who are fully committed to providing a very high standard of work to support the needs of the Trust and to meet the high standards required to provide a safe environment for the care of our patients, 365 days per years which included weekends and Bank Holidays.

Porters are responsible for patient transfers, medical gas deliveries and item/furniture movement. A flexible approach is required as you will be required to work in all areas of the Trust, working various shifts which may include mornings, afternoons, evenings or nights. You will have excellent communication skills, be a team player and able to use your own initiative.

As the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, we offer a unique opportunity to be part of a Trust making a genuine difference to local health outcomes. The Trust is a busy district general hospital offering compete range of acute services, alongside extensive community services.

A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre was opened in March 2023. The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

1.To collect post from wards. Sort the post and deliver to appropriate areas of the Trust.

2.To collect deceased patients from the ward and take them to the Mortuary and complete the appropriate documentation.

3.To arrange viewing of deceased patients in the Mortuary out of hours in extreme situations in accordance with hospital policy.

4.To move patients in the Trust on beds, chairs and trolleys on request.

5.To deliver and collect urgent medical case notes.

6.To collect dirty laundry from designated ward areas.

7.To replace medical gases on wards as requested, taking the empty gas cylinders back to the designated holding stores.

9.To deliver pharmacy products to wards as per schedules.

10.To move equipment and furniture around the site on request, following a Risk Assessment.

11.To comply with the Bed Policy for replacement beds and mattresses, and the issue of beds from the Bed Store.

12.To change medical gas manifolds as necessary.

13.To collect and deliver items on cages and trolleys to all required areas.

14.To deliver bloods and specimens to Pathology and to wards.

15.To assist with the transfer of patients between beds, trolleys, chairs.

16.To respond to fast-track/emergency requests.

17.To carry trust issued communication devices (i.e. Bleeps, radios, mobile devices etc).

18.To be proficient in the use of patient slides.

19.To be responsible for the care of patients during transportation to and from wards and departments on beds, trollies and chairs.

20.To deal with patients in your care that become violent and aggressive, and their relatives, before security attend.

21.To attend all mandatory training and any other training deemed necessary for the post holder to carry out their duties.

22.To wear the uniform as issued and maintain an appearance at a standard commensurate with the duties and role of the post.

23.To wear an ID badge as issued in the interests of security in accordance with the Trust policy.

24.To comply with Statutory and Health Authority Policies on Health & Safety Regulations and Governance.

25.To follow all department Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
