Job Post Details
Member of the Prison Independent Monitoring Board
Job details
Full job description
About the Role
There is an Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) attached to every prison, including the Isle of Man Prison. The Board members on the Island also act as Independent Custody Visitors (ICV) and have responsibility for all the holding cells in custody suites and for prison escorts.
You will be responsible for monitoring visits to examine the way in which detainees are treated; the conditions of the Prison/Custody Suite/Holding Cells and the range of activities available. You will listen and respond to complaints and issues raised by prisoners and seek solutions to issues raised. You will be expected to be part of a rota for scheduled visits, and also attend the prison in the event of a serious incident.
The role of the Board involves a wide range of responsibilities, and each member is expected to contribute to the work of the Board through participation in various meetings. Some are regular tasks to which all members of the Board are expected to make a contribution. Others occur less frequently and may not always involves all members.
The Board is seeking members who have a variety of life experiences and who can demonstrate an interest in criminal justice, rehabilitation, and an understanding of the reasons why people can find themselves in custody and the welfare of prisoners.
This is a voluntary role but members of the Board are compensated for their time and reasonable expenses for attending meetings.
