If you have spent the last few years working in A&E, ICU, ITU, HDU, CCU, Acute Medicine or Acute Surgery, this could be an opportunity to take everything you have learned clinically and use it in a completely different environment.

We are recruiting for an experienced Registered Adult Nurse to join an international medical assistance team as a Medical Case Manager.

You will still be making clinical decisions, assessing risk, recognising deterioration and determining the safest course of action but instead of managing patients at the bedside, you will be coordinating their care from start to finish.

The cases are varied, international and often complex.

You could be supporting a patient who has become seriously unwell while travelling overseas, reviewing treatment being provided by an overseas hospital, speaking directly with treating clinicians, determining whether care can safely continue locally, or helping coordinate an international medical evacuation or repatriation back to the UK.

For nurses who enjoy clinical decision-making, problem-solving and managing complex patients, but are looking for something beyond traditional ward nursing, this offers a genuinely different career path.

What will you actually be doing?

• You will take ownership of medical cases involving individuals and their dependants who become ill or injured while living, travelling or working overseas.
• A typical case could involve receiving a medical report from an overseas hospital, reviewing observations, investigations and treatment, speaking with the patient or their family, liaising directly with the treating doctor and assessing whether the treatment plan is clinically appropriate.
• From there, you will continue to monitor the case and determine the safest next step.
• That might mean continuing treatment locally, arranging specialist review, coordinating further investigations, determining whether the patient is fit to fly, or supporting the organisation of a medical evacuation or repatriation.
• You will be trusted to use your own clinical judgement while having access to a wider medical team for support and escalation where necessary.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Clinically assessing new and ongoing medical cases.
• Reviewing symptoms, observations, medical reports, investigations and treatment plans.
• Speaking directly with patients, families, doctors and hospitals around the world.
• Identifying clinical risk and recognising when a patient's condition is deteriorating.
• Developing and continually reviewing appropriate case-management plans.
• Prioritising multiple cases according to urgency and clinical need.
• Coordinating referrals, specialist reviews, investigations and treatment.
• Assessing whether the care available locally is clinically appropriate.
• Determining whether a patient is medically fit to travel.
• Supporting medical evacuations and international repatriations.
• Assessing what medical support may be required during travel.
• Managing cases independently while escalating appropriately to senior medical colleagues.
• Supporting pre-travel medical assessments, vaccinations and management of pre-existing medical conditions.

What we're looking for

You must be a Registered Adult Nurse with a current NMC PIN.

The strongest candidates will usually have around 4+ years of recent acute nursing experience, ideally gained within environments such as:

A&E / Emergency Department | ICU | ITU | HDU | CCU | Acute Medicine | Acute Surgical Nursing

You should be confident managing acutely unwell adults and comfortable with:

• Clinical assessment and clinical reasoning.
• Recognising and responding to deterioration.
• Triage and prioritisation.
• Reviewing observations and clinical information.
• Making evidence-based clinical decisions.
• Escalating concerns appropriately.
• Communicating confidently with doctors and senior clinicians.
• Managing multiple priorities at the same time.
• Clear clinical documentation.

You do not need previous experience as a Medical Case Manager.

What matters most is having a strong acute clinical foundation and being able to apply that judgement in a remote case-management environment.

Previous exposure to medical assistance, international healthcare, travel medicine, repatriation, medical insurance, military healthcare or government healthcare would be advantageous but is not essential.

Working pattern

This is a full-time, four-day-per-week position, with the medical service operating between 8am and 10pm.
