Location: Field-Based | National UK Travel
Job Type: Permanent | Full-Time

We are looking for an experienced, commercially driven National Surgical Sales Specialist to lead the growth and adoption of our Heidelberg OPERA Digital Surgical Microscope platform and associated Intraoperative OCT (iOCT) technologies across the UK.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Heidelberg Engineering at a pivotal stage in the expansion of our digital surgical portfolio. You'll have the chance to introduce innovative technology to ophthalmic surgical teams across the UK, working closely with clinicians to support better surgical workflows and patient outcomes. If you have a proven track record in capital medical equipment sales and thrive on building lasting customer relationships, this role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact within a growing and innovative business.

The Role

As the National Surgical Sales Specialist, you will take ownership of the complete customer journey, from identifying new business opportunities and managing complex capital equipment sales through to product demonstrations, clinical evaluations, installation, user training, and ongoing customer support.

Working across NHS Trusts, private hospitals, academic medical centres, and specialist ophthalmic clinics, you will build strategic relationships with ophthalmic surgeons, theatre managers, procurement professionals, hospital executives, and Key Opinion Leaders to drive the successful adoption of Heidelberg OPERA throughout the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver and exceed annual sales and profitability targets for the Heidelberg OPERA platform and associated products.
  • Develop and implement strategic sales and territory plans to maximise market growth.
  • Identify and develop new business opportunities within NHS Trusts, private hospitals, and specialist ophthalmic centres.
  • Manage the full consultative sales cycle, including lead generation, product demonstrations, clinical evaluations, commercial negotiations, tender support, and contract completion.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with surgeons, theatre managers, procurement teams, clinical directors, and hospital executives.
  • Deliver engaging product demonstrations and support in-theatre evaluations.
  • Coordinate installations with Service Engineers and Clinical Applications Specialists.
  • Provide comprehensive product and clinical training to surgeons and theatre teams.
  • Support customers during initial surgical procedures to ensure successful clinical adoption.
  • Develop Key Opinion Leaders and flagship reference sites across the UK.
  • Represent Heidelberg Engineering at national and international conferences, exhibitions, and educational meetings.
  • Maintain accurate CRM records, sales forecasts, and pipeline management.

About You

We're looking for a confident, commercially focused professional who combines excellent sales skills with clinical credibility and a passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences.

Essential Experience

  • Minimum of five years' experience selling high-value capital medical equipment.
  • Proven track record of consistently achieving or exceeding sales targets.
  • Experience working within NHS and private healthcare environments.
  • Strong understanding of ophthalmic surgery, ophthalmic devices, or operating theatre environments.
  • Experience managing complex consultative sales processes and strategic customer accounts.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout the UK, with occasional international travel.

Skills & Personal Attributes

  • Highly motivated and results-driven with strong commercial acumen.
  • Excellent interpersonal, influencing, and relationship-building skills.
  • Professional, confident, and credible when working with clinicians and senior stakeholders.
  • Outstanding consultative selling, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a national field-based role.
  • Highly organised with excellent planning and time management skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Collaborative team player with a customer-first approach.
  • Adaptable, resilient, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong commercial awareness combined with clinical credibility.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, long sales cycles, and complex implementation projects.

Desirable

  • Experience within ophthalmology or surgical microscopy.
  • Existing network within the UK ophthalmic surgical community.
  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences, Biomedical Science, Vision Science, Medical Imaging, or a related scientific discipline (or equivalent professional experience).

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary.
  • Performance-related bonus.
  • Company car or car allowance.
  • Pension scheme.
  • Private healthcare.
  • Laptop, mobile phone, and tablet.
  • Comprehensive product training and ongoing professional development.
  • The opportunity to work with innovative surgical technology that is transforming ophthalmic care.
  • A collaborative and supportive working environment within a global organisation recognised for excellence and innovation.
