Painter and Decorator
Painter and Decorator
Job details
Full job description
C L Danson (Building Contractors) Limited is seeking an experienced Painter & Decorator to join our directly employed workforce.
We undertake a broad range of building works across Lancashire and the wider North West, including refurbishment, insurance reinstatement, planned maintenance, property improvement, and minor works.
The role will involve working across a variety of projects, including occupied residential properties, social housing, and public-sector premises.
About the role
The successful applicant will be responsible for carrying out decorating works from initial preparation through to final finish.
Typical duties will include:
- Preparing walls, ceilings, timberwork, and other surfaces prior to decoration
- Filling, sanding, caulking, and carrying out minor making-good works
- Carrying out pre-paint repairs and preparation to timber roofline, including fascias, soffits, and associated external timberwork
- Preparing external joinery for decoration, including removal of loose or failed material, filling, sanding, and making good prior to painting
- Identifying timber defects that require joinery repair or replacement and reporting these for attention by the appropriate trade
- Applying emulsion, gloss, satin, masonry paint, and other specified coatings
- Decorating doors, frames, skirting boards, architraves, and other joinery
- Wallpapering and hanging wallcoverings
- Internal and external decorating works
- Completing decoration following refurbishment, repair, and insurance reinstatement works
- Carrying out planned and reactive decorating works
- Protecting existing finishes, fixtures, fittings, and surrounding areas
- Completing snagging and remedial works where required
- Working from schedules, specifications, drawings, and site instructions
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and organised working area
The role does not require the successful applicant to undertake joinery repairs such as timber splicing or replacement sections. Where more substantial timber repairs are required, these will be undertaken by a joiner. The decorator will, however, be expected to carry out a good standard of filling, preparation, and making good prior to decoration.
As many of our projects are undertaken within occupied properties and public-facing environments, a professional and considerate approach is essential.
The candidate
We are looking for someone who:
- Has substantial practical experience as a Painter & Decorator
- Produces a consistently good standard of preparation and finish
- Is competent in wallpapering and wallcoverings
- Is confident carrying out preparation and minor pre-paint repairs to external timberwork
- Can recognise when a timber defect requires joinery repair rather than decorating preparation
- Can work independently and organise their own workload
- Works well alongside other trades and site staff
- Takes pride in their workmanship
- Is dependable, punctual, and professional
- Uses materials responsibly and minimises waste
- Communicates appropriately with clients, residents, tenants, and members of the public
- Is comfortable working within occupied properties
- Understands the importance of working in accordance with RAMS and company Health & Safety procedures
- Can identify defects, additional works, or issues and report these appropriately to management
Essential requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a full UK driving licence
- Be willing and able to satisfactorily complete an Enhanced DBS check
C L Danson (Building Contractors) Limited will arrange the Enhanced DBS check. A satisfactory Enhanced DBS result will be required before employment can commence.
Qualifications
An NVQ Level 2 in Painting & Decorating, or equivalent trade qualification, is desirable, although experienced decorators without formal qualifications will also be considered where they can demonstrate the required level of competence and workmanship.
A CSCS card and other relevant construction training would also be advantageous.
Training and development
C L Danson (Building Contractors) Limited will provide the successful applicant with relevant training as part of their induction and ongoing development.
This will include:
- Asbestos Awareness
- Working at Height
- Manual Handling
- PASMA Tower Scaffold training
Further training will also be provided where appropriate to the role and the type of work being undertaken.
What we are looking for
This position would suit an experienced decorator who wants a varied role within an established building contractor, with work covering refurbishment, reinstatement, housing, and maintenance projects.
We are looking for someone who can be trusted to work to a high standard, deal professionally with our clients and building occupants, and become a reliable long-term member of the C L Danson (Building Contractors) Limited team.
About C L Danson (Building Contractors) Limited: At C L Danson (Building Contractors) Limited, we take pride in delivering high-quality construction services to a diverse range of clients. Our expertise extends to working with organizations such as local authorities and housing associations, providing both reactive and planned maintenance solutions. With a strong commitment to professionalism and excellence, we have built a reputation for completing projects on time and to the highest standards. As a member of our team, you will have the chance to contribute to outstanding projects, making a significant impact on local communities. Join us in our mission to enhance the built environment while growing your career in a supportive and rewarding work environment.
