Full job description

Commencing October 2026, or April 2027, these posts are equivalent to a Specialty Registrar Level 8 or a post CCT Fellow in Colorectal Surgery. Candidates holding the FRCS or in the case of overseas applicants an equivalent qualification are invited to apply for the posts which are recognised for higher surgical training.

This is presently on a 1:8 rota in St Mark’s with a very infrequent contribution to the EGS rota at Northwick Park, and will be banded at Band 1A. The band is subject to regular review and will vary to reflect any revised rota arrangements.

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) cares for the people of Brent, Ealing, Harrow and beyond.

Our team of more than 8,200 clinical and support staff serve a diverse population of almost one million people.

We run major acute services at:
Northwick Park Hospital: home to one of the busiest emergency departments (A&E) in the country. The hospital provides a full range of services including the country’s top-rated hyper-acute stroke unit and one of only three hyper-acute rehabilitation units in the UK

St Mark’s Hospital: an internationally renowned specialist centre for bowel disease

Ealing Hospital: a busy district general hospital providing a range of clinical services, as well as 24/7 emergency department and urgent care centre, and specialist care at Meadow House Hospice

Central Middlesex Hospital: our planned care site, hosting a range of surgical and outpatient services and collocated with an urgent care centre.

We are a university teaching NHS trust, in recognition of the important role we play in training clinicians of the future and bringing the benefits of research to the public.

There are 9 Resident Surgical Officers/Fellows (Specialty Registrar Year 7-8/post CCT). The appointees are tenable for six months extendable to one year. The Resident Surgical Officers/Fellows will be appointed to a specific role (e.g. Robotic Cancer surgery, Complex Cancer Surgery, Intestinal Failure/Abdominal Wall, Pelvic Floor (advertised separately) or can rotate through up to two of the specialist firms (primary cancer, complex cancer, IBD) each 6 month period. There are two Complex Cancer posts (including some robotics), two primary Cancer posts (one of which is purely robotic and the other includes some robotic surgery), one intestinal failure and abdominal wall post (including robotics) and three IBD posts (one of which is a robotic IBD post, and the others include complex abdominal IBD and advanced proctology, with opportunities to gain experience in AIN and pilonidal disease).

All RSOs/Fellows are exposed to an exceptional tertiary referral practice in a colorectal subspeciality and will gain in-depth insight into the diagnosis and management of rare colorectal conditions. These posts are intended for candidates at the end of their colorectal sub-speciality training (near FRCS, or equivalent, or post CCT).

All Resident Surgical Officers/Fellows take part in a one in eight rota for St Mark’s, with a very small contribution to the EGS rota at Northwick Park (one in forty-eight).

This post is designed for 6 months, but can be extended for another 6 months if appropriate.

Duties of the RSOs include daily ward rounds and management of ward patients, contribution to clinics and MDTs and to take an active role in the operating theatre.
