Job Overview
We are seeking a friendly and efficient Cafe Assistant (freelance / self employed) to join our team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about delivering excellent customer service and maintaining high standards of food safety. We are an entirely plant based and gluten-free business, so expect an understanding of the importance of maintaining food safety and cross contamination within the cafe. This role involves supporting daily café operations, preparing beverages and food items, and ensuring a welcoming environment for all customers. The position offers an opportunity to develop skills in hospitality and food service within a vibrant setting. You will be working independently during some afternoons, to efficiently and thoroughly clean and prepare the cafe to close. The position requires you to be comfortable, organised & confident in running the cafe during quieter periods by yourself, working in a space with limited prep and storage space. The cafe is set within a collective of local female-led businesses.

Hours / Days required:

Tuesday-Friday 11am-5pm.

Saturday-Sunday 10-5pm.

More hours available due to Bank Holidays / Manager absence due to catering.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including coffee and tea, adhering to recipes and presentation standards.
  • Assist with food preparation tasks, ensuring all items meet quality and safety standards.
  • Serve customers efficiently at the counter or table, providing friendly and attentive service.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the café area, including tables, counters, and equipment.
  • Handle cash transactions accurately using the till system, including giving correct change.
  • Follow food safety regulations diligently to ensure a hygienic environment.
  • Restock supplies as needed, including ingredients, utensils, and packaging materials.
  • Support team members during busy periods to ensure smooth operation.

Experience

  • Previous barista experience is desirable but not essential; training will be provided for the right candidate.
  • Knowledge of food safety practices is preferred to uphold hygiene standards.
  • Experience in serving customers in a fast-paced environment is advantageous.
  • Basic maths skills are necessary for handling cash transactions accurately.
  • Strong organisational skills with good time management are essential to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • A positive attitude and excellent communication skills are important for creating a welcoming atmosphere for customers. This role offers an engaging environment where you can enhance your hospitality skills while contributing to a friendly team dedicated to delivering quality service.

Pay: £13.50 per hour
