Job Summary
We’re looking for a friendly and experienced person to join our team of staff and volunteers at Branches Café. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in providing exceptional service to our customers as a kitchen assistant and with front of house food preparation and catering tasks. The candidate must be available to work flexible hours, weekends and Bank Holidays and occasional evenings and give CV experience of working in catering kitchens.

Located just outside Exeter, Poltimore House is a Grade II* Listed Building dating back to 1550. The House suffered from serious neglect and vandalism in the past, but is now owned by a registered charity. Restoration was underway until an arson attack in April 2024, but despite this setback, the Trust has ambitious plans to restore the House as a focal point for the arts, business, communities and wellbeing.

Attracting visitors to the House & Grounds is an important part of our plans, and Branches Café opened in 2022. Staffed mainly by volunteers, the Café attracts a growing number of customers. To achieve our ambitious plans for growth, we need to strengthen our team with a salaried Catering Assistant.

Opening times are currently Wednesday to Monday closed Tuesdays 10am-4pm, with Tuesdays for private hires and occasional evening events throughout the week.

What you’ll be doing:

You’ll be preparing and serving delicious high-quality, locally sourced food and delivering excellent customer experience and ensuring a welcoming atmosphere.

You will bring a positive attitude, a passion for excellence and a love of working with people – including the ability to motivate and upskill the volunteer team who will be working alongside you.

Main purposes of job:

To support day-to-day catering for the Café, private hires and events with food preparation, cooking and menu development including allergen requirements.

To support the work of volunteers in kitchen sanitizing, cleaning and use of dishwasher, and provide training where necessary.

To maintain high standards of quality in food, food storage, hygiene and customer experience.

Key tasks:

To prepare food and to oversee the preparation and presentation of food by volunteers.

To ensure smooth workflow in the Café from taking orders to delivering meals.

To monitor stock and to assist the Catering Host in ordering supplies.

To suggest ideas for continuous improvements in menus, service and profitability.

Key results/objectives:

Providing the capacity to meet increased demand.

Providing the flexibility to respond to varying patterns of demand throughout the week.

Maintain high quality standards in the Café, private hires and events, based on customer/participant feedback.

Ability to work, clean and tidy, using “clean as you go” mantra

Contribute to high levels of volunteer recruitment, motivation and satisfaction.Responsibility for staff and equipment
