About Sussex Community Dermatology Service (SCDS)
SCDS is a community‑based dermatology network delivering specialist skin care across Coastal West Sussex, Surrey, Mid Sussex, West Kent and Berkshire. Our “see‑and‑treat” model provides timely, high‑quality care that reduces unnecessary secondary‑care referrals and improves patient experience. Key services include:
- Minor skin surgery (excision, biopsy, shave, punch)
- Patch testing for allergies
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT)
- Phototherapy (UV‑B/PUVA)
- Day‑case procedures
- Dermatological assessment clinics
- Skin‑cancer screening and early‑intervention programmes
About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic, committed Health Care Assistant to join our busy, community‑based dermatology team in Slough. You will support consultant dermatologists, GP‑wSIs and the wider multidisciplinary team in a fast‑paced “see‑and‑treat” environment. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys direct patient contact and wants to gain hands‑on experience in dermatology.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with patient preparation and support during minor dermatology procedures (e.g., excision, biopsy).
- Help with pre‑ and post‑procedure care, including wound dressing, dressing changes and patient education.
- Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date patient records in the electronic health record system.
- Support infection prevention and control protocols and help keep the clinical area sterile and safe.
- Contribute to quality‑improvement projects and clinical‑governance activities.
- Work collaboratively with consultants, GP‑wSIs, nurses, HCAs and allied health professionals.
- Provide basic self‑care advice to patients after procedures (under supervision) via telephone or in‑person.
- Attend team meetings, case discussions and training sessions as required.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience working in a clinical setting, preferably in dermatology, primary care or community health.
- Strong interpersonal and customer‑service skills, with empathy and professionalism.
- Ability to follow clinical protocols and maintain patient safety.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks.
- Basic IT skills and familiarity with electronic patient records (e.g., EMIS Web, SystmOne).
What We Offer
- Comprehensive induction and ongoing training in dermatology and clinical skills.
- Modern clinics equipped with state‑of‑the‑art technology.
- A supportive, team‑focused culture that values continuous learning and development.
- Opportunities for career progression within the NHS (e.g., moving into a nursing or specialist dermatology role).
