Full job description
Whilst this role is advertised as "Medical Receptionist", we officially call it "Clinical Assistant". This is as no formal experience is required for this role and the latter can put some people off.
Our Clinic
The heart of sexual and reproductive healthcare is sexually active people. Where abstinence exists, one may question the need for such a specialty (of course, we can think of exceptions).
Where there is no sex, there is no need for Clarewell Clinics.
The healthcare needs revolving around sex are typically broken down into the following:
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Genital dermatology
- Sexual dysfunction (coming soon to Clarewell)
- Family planning & contraception
- Human sexuality & gender (coming soon to Clarewell)
If we look at these components individually, we may not see any connection. However, when we place them under the fold of ‘sex’, their relationship is undeniable.
Now, if we add the ‘human’ and ‘relationship’ factors, navigating sexual health can be a fragile journey requiring the utmost respect and humanity.
What we do is rather simple: to prevent sexual health problems coming in the way of life and relationships, one patient at a time.
And in doing so, we hope to become the only place people need to go to ensure their sexual health.
Job Overview
You will be assisting our clinicians in the various procedures we perform at the clinic including (but not limited to) hyfrecation, coil fittings, surgical terminations and vasectomies. This is a fantastic role which allows you to learn from our clinicians and get hands-on experience dealing with patients. The ability to put patients at ease, effectively assist clinicians with all their needs, and keep a calm and friendly demeanour are paramount.
This role will also include chaperoning, processing samples, and helping our medical receptionists with patient support.
You will also have the opportunity to undertake further training and run your own ‘drop and go’ service over time, which entails taking samples from patients, processing them, and sharing results.
Responsibilities and Duties
- To ensure patients’ have a smooth and relaxing experience in the clinic
- To ensure the clinic rooms are tidy and fully stocked with the correct equipment and medication
- To provide support to the clinical team (inc. chaperoning and assisting during consultations)
- To process patient samples and document results
- To run a ‘Drop & Go’ service (inc. bloods/phlebotomy, urine and swabs from patients)
- To ensure that the clinic is well organised and maintained
- To ensure your mandatory training and employee documents are all up to date
- To comply with Clarewell Policies, Guidances & SOPs
- To stay up to date with all changes at Clarewell (inc. via Team Updates)
- To assist with any other duties that are within your remit and the time available to you to assist the clinic as a whole.
Requirements
Character is everything. The tools can easily be learnt.
How do you know if you are right for this job?
Simple. You’ll find yourself answering yes to the following questions:
- Do you see a set of messy knives and forks and find yourself compelled to tidy them up?
- Do you see a stain on a beautiful wooden furniture and get annoyed?
- Do you see a message with double spacing and incorrect grammar and feel a slight displeasure?
- Do you find it difficult to leave something for another day once you’ve started it?
- Do you find yourself having to make notes when an instruction is given to you?
- Do you plan each day of your holiday before you get there?
- Do you watch graphic surgery scenes on TV when your friends turn away?
- Do you find that you calm others down in times of stress or anxiety?
- Are you the person your friends and family call for help when they are moving?
- Are you the go-to babysitter in your family?
- Do you find it easy to break the ice when someone is not very chatty?
If you find yourself not fitting one of these categories, read on. If you find yourself not fitting more than two of these categories, this role may not be right for you (no offence!).
And, of course, the following legal requirements must be met:
- Passport/Visa
- Bank account
- Social security number (i.e. National Insurance Number)
- DBS Check (i.e. national security check)
Logistics/Timetabling
- Tuesday: 9 am - 7 pm
- Thursday: 9 am - 7 pm
- Sunday: 10 am - 3 pm
Remuneration & Benefits
- Salary £13.15/hour (to increase to £13.85/hour after probation)
- Annual leave entitlement (paid at the end of every month along with salary)
- 28 days, pro rata
- 9 days bank holiday, pro rata
- Sick Leave
- As per SSP
- Opportunity - at a later date - to make up the sickness hours until SSP sets in.
Within 20 months, you will find yourself with a greater exposure to the different paths of life, technologies and more! If you have managed to create progression for yourself - excellent - we will consider the possibility of moving you into a new role. Otherwise, we will urge you to reflect upon what it is that you want from your professional life and discuss whether this is truly the role/place for you. We say this with our mutual interests at heart. “It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses”.
Please note, that length of service at Clarewell alone is not a reason for a pay increase. Whilst we will respect inflationary changes, any further pay increases must be performance driven.
Next Steps
Before we turn to the next steps, we like to start the process by asking a few logistical questions. This is to ensure that the time we spend getting to understand each other better is all the more worthwhile.
