About Tutoring Heroes
Tutoring Heroes is a relationship-led 1-to-1 online tutoring school supporting students aged 7–18.
We specialise in maths, science and English and work closely with families who value consistency, clear communication and long-term academic confidence.
We are now recruiting high-calibre university students to join our growing team.
The Role
You will deliver structured 1-to-1 online lessons to students at KS2, KS3, GCSE and A-level.
This role involves more than simply explaining content. Our tutors:
- Build strong, positive relationships with students
- Boost confidence and motivation
- Identify gaps in understanding and address them methodically
- Provide clear written feedback to parents every four weeks
- Communicate professionally and respond promptly to emails
- Deliver sessions consistently throughout the year
All sessions are delivered online using our shared whiteboard platform.
Subjects
Applicants must be able to tutor at least two of the following subjects confidently up to and including GCSE level:
- Maths
- English
- Science (meaning all three of Biology, Chemistry and Physics)
Priority will be given to candidates who can tutor multiple subjects and levels, including A-level.
Commitment Requirements (Please Read Carefully)
We require:
- The ability to tutor at least two core subjects to GCSE level is essential. For science, this means being able to tutor all three sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), not just one. The only exception to this requirement is for applicants who are studying Primary Education.
- A minimum of 5 hours per week
- A maximum of 8 hours per week
- Applicants with consistent availability between 4pm and 8pm Monday–Thursday will be prioritised.
- A minimum 18-month commitment as providing our students with consistency is very important.
- Year-round availability (not just term time)
Pay
- £13 per hour (KS2–GCSE)
- £18 per hour (A-level)
- Paid monthly via bank transfer
- Full pay for same-day cancellations by parents
You will work as a self-employed freelancer.
Who We Are Looking For
Our strongest tutors:
- Have excellent academic credentials
- Communicate clearly and warmly
- Take pride in reliability and punctuality
- Respond quickly to emails
- Have interests and hobbies outside their degree
- Genuinely enjoy working with young people
We value attention to detail and long-term commitment.
Academic Criteria
To apply, you must have:
- Grade 7 or above at GCSE in every subject you wish to tutor
- Grade B, A or A* at A-level in any subject you wish to tutor at A-level
- Strong written and spoken English
Our Wider Mission
We donate 10% of our profits to Ruhanga Development School in rural Uganda.
Tutors who have been with us for 12 months:
- Can stay up to two weeks at Uganda Lodge, right next door to the school (meals and accommodation included)
- Each year, one tutor is selected to receive return flights from the UK
We genuinely believe education changes lives both locally and globally. It is important that you share these values!
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: £13.00-£18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 5 – 8 per week
Application question(s):
- Please state the degree you are studying, the university you attend, and your expected graduation year.
- What are your hobbies and interests outside of university?
- Please confirm you can commit to:
o 5–8 hours per week
o At least 18 months
o Regular availability between 4pm–8pm Monday–Thursday (especially between 5pm and 7pm)
- What grades did you achieve in the following:
GCSE Maths
GCSE English Literature
GCSE English Language
GCSE Biology
GCSE Chemistry
GCSE Physics
GCSE Combined science
- What did you study at A-level and what grades did you achieve?
- Which core subjects can you tutor to GCSE level? (Select all that apply)
- Maths
- English
- Science (Biology, Chemistry AND Physics)
Important:
You must be able to tutor at least two core subjects to GCSE (unless studying Primary Education). Science only counts if you can tutor Biology, Chemistry AND Physics. You must have a minimum Grade 7 in each subject you can tutor.
- What subjects are you able to tutor at A-level? Please note, you must have achieved a Grade B, A or A* at A-level in the subject.
Work Location: Remote
