Full job description

FARM SHOP COOK ASSISTANT – NO EVENINGS

Do you love good food, enjoy being busy and taking pride in doing things well?

Come and join our friendly Bakehouse team as a Farm Shop Cook Assistant in a permanent, part-time role with sociable hours, no evenings and only working every other Saturday.

This is not a typical kitchen job. As a Farm Shop Cook Assistant, you’ll be part of a hands-on team helping to produce a wide range of food from scratch for our award-winning farm shop, from soups and pies to cakes and desserts, including using our own meat and locally sourced produce.

Based just 6 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne, Blagdon Farm Shop (NE13 6DA) is passionate about great food, with over 65% of what we sell reared, grown or made by us. Our Bakehouse kitchen is at the heart of what we do! Go to www.theblagdonfarmshop.co.uk with links to facebook and instagram to find out more about us.

LET’S GET A TASTE FOR THE ROLE!

  • Preparing fresh ingredients including fruit, vegetables and meat for the cooks
  • Making some products from scratch (e.g. soups and cakes – full training given)
  • Packing and labelling products accurately ready for sale in the shop
  • Producing food to a consistent, high standard
  • Stock rotation, being organised and helping the kitchen to run smoothly
  • Maintaining excellent hygiene and cleanliness in the kitchen

YOU’LL FIT RIGHT IN IF YOU:

  • Have some kitchen experience (a catering qualification a bonus!) or a keen interest in cooking (we’ll teach you the rest)
  • Enjoy working at a good pace, keeping busy and being hands-on
  • Take pride in doing things properly, you have attention to detail
  • Are reliable, flexible and happy to get stuck in
  • Work well in a small team but are also happy getting on by yourself

PLEASE NOTE Your own transport is essential due to our rural location

In a nutshell… It’s a busy kitchen, but it’s a good place to work. If you like proper food, a straightforward day’s work and being part of a team in an independent business that takes pride in what it does, you’ll fit in well here.

THE HOURS:

  • The role averages 3 days/week (approx. 24+ hours/week) between 7.00am to 5.00pm, including alternate Saturdays by rota. Please note our working day is 8 - 9 hours long and the Bakehouse normally works Tuesday - Saturday.
  • Extra hours/days are expected at busy times, for example the run up to Christmas and holiday/sickness cover.

WE OFFER:

  • A permanent part-time position
  • Pay: £12.80 per hour for age 21+ (younger applicants paid at age-related rate)
  • Paid breaks (paid the whole time you are at work) and no split shifts
  • Free parking and easy drive to work
  • 20% staff discount (on discountable items)
  • Staff uniform
  • On-the-job training/upskilling will be given, with opportunities to gain formal qualifications/apprenticeships

We are keen to also hear from candidates looking for a new challenge or a better work-life balance/more sociable hours with skills and experience: Chef, Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, Chef Assistant, Cook, Catering, Kitchen Assistant.

If you’re enthusiastic, keen to learn and enjoy being part of a small, friendly and dedicated team, this is a great opportunity. We’re not a big kitchen - we care about our food and our team who make it. Bring a strong work ethic and a good attitude, and if you’re passionate about food, even better!

Please send your CV to jobs@theblagdonfarmshop.co.uk with a short covering letter saying why you are the best person for the role. Thank you for applying and good luck!
