An exciting opportunity is available for a Consultant Histopathologist within a large and highly regarded Cellular Pathology service in Wales. The post offers the opportunity to join an established team of 13 Consultant Histopathologists delivering comprehensive Cellular Pathology services across a major tertiary referral and diagnostic centre with strong academic, research, and subspecialist pathology links.

The Department of Cellular Pathology provides a broad range of regional and national specialist pathology services, including Histopathology, cytopathology, lymphoma diagnostics, sarcoma pathology, breast pathology support, and tertiary referral cancer services. The department is UKAS-accredited and plays a significant role in precision medicine, digital pathology, and translational research initiatives across Wales.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

The Consultant Histopathologist will:

  • Provide Consultant-led Histopathology and Cellular Pathology services
  • Undertake diagnostic surgical pathology and cytopathology reporting
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and cancer diagnostic pathways
  • Contribute to regional and tertiary referral pathology services
  • Participate in subspecialty reporting according to individual interests and departmental needs
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities
  • Support service development and modernisation initiatives
  • Participate in teaching and supervision of junior doctors, trainees, and undergraduate medical students
  • Contribute to research, innovation, and academic development within Cellular Pathology
  • Participate in departmental planning and leadership activities
  • Maintain high standards of diagnostic accuracy and patient safety
  • Participate in the departmental on-call rota
  • Optional participation in Coroner's autopsy services

The department supports primary, secondary, and tertiary care services across a large regional population and functions as a major referral centre for complex pathology cases.

The department manages a high volume of complex surgical pathology specimens and supports multiple regional MDT meetings across cancer pathways.

Digital Pathology & Technology

The department has advanced digital and molecular pathology infrastructure, including:

  • Fully digitised pathology reporting pathways
  • Digital slide scanners for routine diagnostic use
  • Digital imaging and telepathology systems
  • Voice recognition reporting software
  • Integrated laboratory information systems
  • Molecular pathology and genomic medicine integration
  • Facilities supporting flexible and home working arrangements

The service is actively developing academically integrated Cellular-Molecular Pathology services aligned with genomic medicine and precision diagnostics.

Person Specification

Requirements

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
  • Specialist Registration in Histopathology or eligibility within 6 months
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification
  • CCT or evidence of equivalence to UK CCT standards
  • Strong diagnostic Histopathology experience
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary clinical environments
  • Evidence of audit and quality improvement participation
  • Experience teaching and supervising clinical staff
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to undertake Consultant on-call responsibilities

Desirable

  • Additional postgraduate qualifications
  • Teaching or medical education qualifications
  • Research experience in Histopathology or autopsy practice
  • Interest in digital pathology and molecular diagnostics
  • Leadership and service development experience
  • Interest in subspecialty pathology development
