Help Change Lives Through Education
Are you a passionate Maths or English tutor looking for a role where your teaching genuinely makes a difference?
We are seeking an inspiring Functional Skills Tutor to deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 within a prison education setting. This is a unique opportunity to support learners on their rehabilitation journey, helping them develop the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and build brighter futures.
About the Role
As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will deliver engaging and inclusive lessons to groups of up to 12 learners, supporting individuals with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. You will use innovative teaching approaches, adaptive learning techniques and digital resources to make Maths and English relevant, accessible and enjoyable.
You will:
- Deliver Functional Skills Maths or English qualifications from Entry 1 to Level 2.
- Conduct initial assessments and use BKSB diagnostics to identify learner starting points.
- Develop and maintain Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
- Create engaging lesson plans that support learner progression and achievement.
- Motivate and inspire learners to reach their full potential.
- Support learners with additional learning needs and reasonable adjustments.
- Monitor progress and prepare learners for examinations and assessments.
- Promote literacy, numeracy and reading for pleasure across the prison environment.
- Work collaboratively with prison staff, support practitioners and employability teams to support positive learner outcomes.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic educator who is passionate about helping people succeed.
Essential requirements:
- Level 3 qualification in Maths and English.
- Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
- Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths or English qualifications.
- Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learner needs.
- Excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills.
- A commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and learner success.
Desirable:
- Experience within prison education, adult learning or further education.
- Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
- Internal Quality Assurance qualification (or willingness to work towards).
Why Join Us?
This is more than a teaching role. Every lesson delivered has the potential to improve confidence, create opportunities and support meaningful rehabilitation. You'll be part of a dedicated team committed to helping learners gain the skills they need for life beyond custody.
If you are passionate about education, believe in second chances and want to make a lasting impact, we'd love to hear from you.

Here at People Plus, we make a positive difference to people’s lives – every single day.
We use our experience to support hundreds of thousands of people each year. Our committed teams work across Britain to deliver a range of public services, including employment support, skills training, prison education, starting a business, and support to help employers grow.
To put it simply, we:
- Support people to find and keep jobs
- Help people to set up their own businesses
- Deliver skills training to further people’s careers
- Work with employers to build a skilled and happy workforce
- Rehabilitate people with convictions
- Tackle the root causes of offending
- Support carers
We are extremely proud to be a Gold accredited Investors in People organisation. This demonstrates our commitment to creating the very best environment and culture for our colleagues to succeed and thrive.
We are committed to transforming the lives of people with convictions through our work in prisons.
Our services have been designed to tackle the underlying causes of offending behaviour so people can make positive changes to their lives.
With more than 500 people working to support people with convictions in custody and in the community, we bring passion, experience and innovation to public sector rehabilitation services.
We also work with specialist partner organisations to help people move away from their past and look forward to a brighter future.
All of our services are designed in partnership with the people who we’re trying to help and away from our direct work with people serving their sentences, we’re working hard to change attitudes towards people who can often be tarnished unfairly following criminal convictions. Our Social Recruitment Framework brings together organisations to tackle any pre-conceived ideas about hiring people who have previously been involved in crime.
We also work with employers on the Ban the Box initiative to support fair and equal recruitment processes and have engaged industry to influence our employer-led curriculum delivered to our learners.
