About the Role

Barnet Council is seeking a Technical Scientific Officer to join its Public Health and Assurance function.

This role offers an exciting opportunity for a scientifically qualified professional to contribute to the protection and improvement of public health through the delivery of technical, scientific and regulatory activities. Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will support evidence-based decision-making, scientific investigations, public health initiatives and technical assurance processes that contribute to the wellbeing of local communities.

The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, scientific expertise and the ability to interpret complex technical information to support operational and strategic public health objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific and technical support across public health and assurance activities.
  • Collect, analyse and interpret scientific, environmental and public health data.
  • Prepare technical reports, risk assessments and evidence-based recommendations.
  • Support investigations relating to public health concerns, environmental risks and community wellbeing.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of public health programmes and initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate technical records and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support quality assurance, governance and continuous improvement activities.
  • Liaise with internal departments, external agencies, healthcare professionals, laboratories and regulatory bodies.
  • Assist with the interpretation and communication of scientific findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Contribute to emergency response and incident management activities where required.

About YouEssential Requirements

  • Degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as:
  • Public Health
  • Biomedical Science
  • Biological Sciences
  • Environmental Health
  • Environmental Science
  • Microbiology
  • Chemistry
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Sciences or a related field
  • Experience working within a scientific, laboratory, regulatory or public health environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience interpreting scientific data and producing technical reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
  • Strong IT and data analysis skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification (MSc, MRes or PhD) in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Experience within local government, public sector, NHS, UKHSA, laboratory or regulatory settings.
  • Knowledge of public health legislation, environmental health principles or scientific governance frameworks.
  • Experience of statistical analysis, research methods or epidemiological data interpretation.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
